There was pandemonium in Onitsha, the commercial nerve of Anambra State, on Wednesday as hundreds of people defied heavy rains to protest the killing of a commercial bus driver by a member of the police mobile force at a checkpoint.

Nigerian Tribune gathered that members of the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) spearheaded the protest against the killing, calling it “a grand plan of systematic killing of Igbo Biafrans by Nigerian government-sponsored forces.”

MASSOB, in a statement made available to the Nigerian Tribune on Wednesday and signed by its Director of Communications, Mr Uchenna Mmadu, said “the so-called anti-terrorist squad, army patrol, SARS and others of such have become a terror which has caused trauma for the people as their style has become warlike.”

It was alleged that the mobile policeman shot the driver, whose identity could not be identified at the time of this report, when he refused to give N20 that was demanded from him at the checkpoint.

Witnesses told the Nigerian Tribune that the driver allegedly explained to the policeman at the checkpoint under the Upper Iweka Bridge that the rains did not allow him to commence work early but that the policeman refused and shot the driver, who was said to have died on the spot.

The incident drew the ire of other drivers who protested the killing, but the policemen at the checkpoint were said to have shot into the air to scare away the rampaging protesters, while tear gas was also said to have been freely used to allow the policemen to escape from the scene.
