In this interview with John Alechenu, the Acting National Publicity Secretary of the All Progressives Congress, Yekini Nabena, speaks about the party’s insistence on the removal of the President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, defections from the APC and other national issues

The only reason many people believe is responsible for the gale of defection in APC is the party’s failure to deliver on the change it promised Nigerians, do you agree?

Which defection are you talking about? Several of your party members including the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, the Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal and so many others…

All the people that left our party were those who left based on their personal interests; it has nothing to do with our performance or lack of it. Take Saraki for example, he left the party because we could not offer what he was asking for.

What did he ask for?

He wants our presidential ticket, Kwankwaso the same, Tambuwal the same, so who else do you want to call?

For more than three years now, the party has not been able to have a grip of the National Assembly despite having clear majority. The opposition has cited this as the more reason why your party has failed; will this be a correct prognosis?

Just like I have just told you; people like Saraki as Senate President are using their positions to negotiate with government which is not possible with this government.

This government is serious about the anticorruption fight. How can we live with a situation which Saraki put the APC-led administration in by having a member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party as Deputy Senate President? And on top of that, he now wants to be president when we have a sitting president who has indicated interest in seeking for a second term. All that Saraki is doing is to pursue his selfish interest; he is not interested in the people.

With the gale of defections, some have argued that your party has become a minority in the National Assembly. From your records, is this true?

How many senators does the opposition have? We are not in the minority; we are still the majority party in both the Senate and the House of Representatives. Let those in opposition go back and check their own records.

If a senate president could abandon your party at this stage, don’t you think this is a dent on the image of your party?

The President of the Senate had no choice because he wanted to play a double game and he was caught. He wanted to remain within the party in order to kill it. From the beginning, you will agree with me that he was never faithful to the party. The coup d’état he plotted with PDP senators to become Senate President against the wishes of the party is there for everyone to see. That he has left today is not a surprise to most of us; he was never present, he only used the party to achieve his personal agenda.

President Muhammadu Buhari has declared his intention to seek reelection come 2019. What can you say he has done to deserve a second term?

The President has done a lot but you see, the problem is that we need to do more to show- case the serious work and the achievements of the President Muhammadu Buhari-led APC administration. We need to embark on a lot of publicity for people to see what the President has been doing. People always think that it is only in the area of anticorruption that the President is working. No. If you look back some years when the PDP was in power, most of the contractors we had were portfolio contractors. Now, look at the agricultural sector, these are things that can speak for themselves, the major problem is that people are expecting the flow of easy money like it used to happen during the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan but now you must work for every kobo you get, no more free money anywhere.

But the presidency decided to bribe some APC legislators to either stay put or denounce the defection.

Why is the presidency bribing lawmakers to impeach Dr Saraki?

Bunch of lies.

The only difference between APC and PDP is that PDP steals and share the money up till the grassroots which helped in maintaining adequate cash flow and keeping the economy afloat while APC embezzles the Treasury through few connected cabals and chieftains thereby enriching few and leaving the masses and the economy suffocated.

why will a president bribe lawmakers under APC to do their job.
Is their job to remove thief saraki and elect one among themselves.
Point of correction,
Thief saraki is no longer the Senate president.

You may substitute bribe for lobby in this instance. However, Buhari lacks what it takes to lobby hence he can either use his cabals to bribe or institutions of government to cajole lawmakers to have his way.

When Buhari slept and never got involved in lobbying, The Senate elected Dr Saraki.

For your information, not all APC Senators are willing to vote against Saraki let alone impeach him.

Please, next time you quote me, stick with facts, Dr Saraki is Nigeria's Senate President, I don't deal with alternatives
