• Says it will substantially reduce the political tensions and executive excesses that come with self-succession

The Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu, has frowned at the heat in the Nigerian political landscape ahead of the 2019 general election and reiterated his call for a six-year single term for the president and governors.

Ekweremadu on his Facebook page @iamekweremadu titled: ‘Still on single term for President and Governors’, yesterday declared that “Nigeria’s political atmosphere is getting toxic ahead of the 2019 general election and governance is taking a backseat.

“Unfortunately, this atmosphere with the accompanying brazen political excesses, are unlikely to abate until well after the 2019 elections.”

He accused the executive arm of government of heating up the polity as evidenced in their desperation to return to office.

“Unable to resist the temptations that come with enormous power of incumbency, those who call the shots today throw everything within their reach into the mix in desperate efforts to retain power at all cost and by all means.”
Ekweremadu said the current political climate informed his position to support one- term of six years for both president and governors.

He added that “I strongly believe a single term of five or six years for president and governors, even if for a stipulated period as was the case with several Latin American democracies, is something Nigerians should revisit after the 2019 general election.”

According to him, this will substantially reduce the political tensions and executive excesses that come with self-succession, adding however that “although a renewable four-year term is popular, societies are dynamic and could make necessary constitutional adjustments to safeguard democracy and make periods leading up to elections less toxic.”

Going down memory lane, the deputy Senate president supported his view with what was obtainable in the United States and other political climes.

“For over 150 years, starting from George Washington up to Harry Truman, there was no term limit for presidents of the United States of America. In fact, President Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR) served four terms (although he died just 11 weeks into his fourth term). It was the 22nd Amendment, which was ratified on February 27, 1951, that gave birth to two-term limit for US presidents.

“Moreover, in the 1970s, many Latin American democracies faced the same challenges we face in Nigeria today. As many of them transited from military and autocratic regimes to democratic regimes, and they discovered that the politics of succession, including incumbents; penchant for self-perpetuation, overheated their polities and threatened their democracies.

They adopted the single term presidency until such a time their respective democracies matured and stabilised. Although virtually all of them have reverted to two-term presidency, Mexico still practices single term presidency, called Sexino. She also retained the Sexino in the 2014 constitution amendment,” he explained.

“In Nigeria’s case, we proposed a single term for the president and governors with several transitional options during the constitution amendment exercise in the 7th National Assembly.

“Unfortunately, it was misunderstood by various political and sectional interests for various reasons and the proposal did not succeed.”

Six years is long enough to tolerate anyman or woman and to mark them for Performance and/or Impeachment.

This silly man. You think six years will be enough for any meaningful development to take place in a country like Nigeria? A silly senator that wasted all his political career in the NA without achieving anything shouldn't be taken serious by sane minds. Hopefully, you and saraki will be retired permanently in 2019. Stealing your constituency money and buying all the luxurious houses in U.S shouldn't be something you should be proud of, Mr deputy Senate president.

Anyway Buhari till 2023 and after Buhari, fashola will takeover from him insha'Allah. And after fashola, hopefully insha'Allah it will be MY TURN

What are you saying young man? The man is 100% guilty. Why do you think he doesn't want to leave the NA and wants to be the senator representing his constituency all his life? The immunity he enjoys is the only thing that has stopped EFCC from apprehending the criminal. I'm telling you this because is the truth. Anytime he leaves the NA, I bet you, he will be arrested within 30 minutes.

No one can stop him from going to NASS, its not like he's selected to be there but was voted in by his people cause he represents them well. If they have anything against him let them go nail him and stop all these media trials. At the end they will still lose the case against him. Is he the only one that has been in the senate for long, you have other senators so what's they big deal in him spending the rest of his life there?

I made a similar idea to this noth quite long on Nairaland!

There are millions of people ready to serve in Nigeria!

Enough of these recycling!

Infact I opined that should anyone served in any capacity for once or six years as the case may be, he/She shouldn't via for any other political office again!

This way, people would be marginalised if it is properly rotated!

Nigeria will remain United as they were before! and the time is now! Hence this division will break this country!

I'll suppport a 5-year single term. 6 years is too much for the country to be ruled by a failure.

The four-year arrangement is better.

We are not some banana republics going by the six and seven year tenure.

African democracy is still nascent, tyrants will capitalize on some loopholes to extend their tenure at the expiration of the first term.

Two terms of four years each is ideal.

A thief will always give reasons why he stole. Am not surprise he said this . Name one single achievement you achieved in your constituency and your constituents felt it. The host of Heaven will disappoint you all. They wil be like them that dream. Any youth voting for APC or PDP is doing his/her generation a disservice. AAC all the way. Anything is possible with God in him we trust. Nigerians are suffering and enough of this .
