Rivers 2019: Tonye Cole resigns from Sahara Group, may challenge Wike

A Nigerian billionaire, Tonye Cole, on Saturday resigned from the board of directors of Sahara Group of Companies, apparently to join the 2019 governorship race in Rivers State.


Mr Cole was an executive director of the energy company which he co-founded in 1996.

The board of Sahara Group in a statement issued on Saturday said he was leaving the company in order to participate in active politics.

The resignation is coming a few days after the Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi, refuted media reports that Mr Cole was his preferred choice for the Rivers governorship election, and not his longtime ally, Dakuku Peterside, who ran unsuccessfully against the current governor, Nyesom Wike, in the 2015 election.

Mr Amaechi on Saturday said that the claim that Mr Cole was his “appointed” candidate was “preposterous” and “deceitful”.

He said his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), in Rivers would choose its governorship candidate through a democratic process.

Until now, most people, especially in Rivers, believed that Mr Peterside’s name would be on the ballot as a candidate of the APC against Mr Wike who is likely going to be the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate.

......Tonye Cole is currently a minister at the Redeemed Christian Church of God. He is that man who prefers sharing his birthday with school children from the slums as against dinning with the high and mighty in a presidential suite somewhere in the Bahamas.

Just as how Alex otti of Abia resigned as a director of a bank and lost the election woefully. Better have an alternative Cole.


BTW I think wike should just continue 2nd term and cole should take over after since they are in harmony.
