Yakubu Dogara, the speaker of the House of Representatives, has dumped the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) for the opposition Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP).

A report which suggests the development was published by Premium Times on Wednesday wherein Mr Dogara picked the nomination form of the PDP.

The online news medium which quoted sources close to the lawmaker and the opposition party said his exit from the ruling party might not be unconnected to the rift between Dogara and his state governor, Mohammed Abubakar.

“He has picked up a PDP nomination form,” a source close to the speaker was quoted to have said.



“They are filling it now and should be submitting it by tomorrow (Thursday),” the source added.

This was also confirmed from another anonymous source at PDP Headquarters.

“I can confirm it, he picked up the form already,” the unnamed official said.

Another news portal, Daily Post, quoting it’s own source said the nomination form was purchased for the speaker by his constituents.

“Yes, I am telling you in confidence. Dogara is defecting to PDP in few hours, because already, the constituents have picked PDP nomination form on his behalf,” the source said.

The Speaker has long been identified as amongst those expected to leave the APC, but he declined to make this public unlike Senate President Bukola Saraki and a host of other top APC politicians who abandoned the ruling party in recent months.

Mr Dogara’s dispute with his APC state governor typifies similar patterns in many APC governed states including Kano, Ogun, Kaduna, Jigawa, Oyo and so on. In many of such states, the lawmakers defected from the governing party with the belief the governors would eventually have their way in the party.
