Some years back, A friend of mine told me poverty is a sin (according to his pastor). Till today I don’t know the origin of this doctrine. I know most of the Old Testament’s sages were wealthy, but I don’t know how it correlates to righteousness and sin, I don’t even think Jesus was bothered.

So believers in Christ...is poverty a sin?

I wouldn't say that it is a sin. It's just a state that needs to be conquered.

A few identifiable people in the Bible, whether actual or in parable, were poor; yet, there is every indication that they are beloved of GOD.

The poor Widow: "Then one poor widow came and threw in two [a]mites, which make a quadrans. 43 So He called His disciples to Himself and said to them, “Assuredly, I say to you that this poor widow has put in more than all those who have given to the treasury; 44 for they all put in out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty put in all that she had, her whole livelihood." - Mark 12:42-44

Lazarus and the rich Man: "[b]But there was a certain beggar named Lazarus, full of sores, who was laid at his gate, desiring to be fed with [a]the crumbs which fell from the rich man’s table.
