Fact: Poverty Has Reduced In Nigeria Despite Overtaking India In Poor Population by Nobody: 6:03am On Sep 19, 2018
To understand the statement that we have overtaken India as the nation with highest population of poor people, we need to look at historical perspective vis a vis india.

It is true that as at today Nigeria took over from India as the country with the largest number of poor people (87million) . But we need to look at the figures with more detail to understand the meaning.

As at 2012, the population of Nigeria was about 170million. According to BBC as at 2012, 100million Nigerians were living below poverty level. Which means only only 70million nigerians were living above poverty. At that same time in 2012, 270million indians were living in poverty. India population was about 1.2billion at the same time.

Now in 2018, Nigeria with population of about 198million has a poor polulation of 87million. The means about 111million Nigerians are living above poverty. But today in India, only about 76million are living in poverty. India population today is about 1.3billion. India has improved tremendously at a rocket speed. Nigeria on the hand have improved, but not fast enough when compared to India.

If we focus on Nigeria only, those living in poverty has reduced from 100million in 2012 to 87million today. Those living above poverty has increased from 70million to about 111million today. That means between 2012 and today, those living above poverty has increased by 41million in Nigeria. This is good number. Most of these improvement was driven by high oil price between 2012 and 2014. The current govt is trying to sustain it with N-power, school feeding, conditional cash transfers, CBN anchor borrowers programme for rice farmes and other grain farmers, investment in rail transport etc. But we need to do more and make it sustainable by reducing our dependence on a volatile product like oil and gas by promoting places like Aba in Abia state as industrial hub for small scale skill base manufacturing.

We need to understand that 111million Nigerans living above poverty is more than the total population of Ghana, Cameroon, Benin Republic, Libya, Niger Republic and Togo combined.

India was growing with a very high rate due to thier increase in export driven economy. This lead to drastic reduction in population living below poverty. Nigeria need to move away from a country who is just good in consuming foreign goods to a country consuming local goods (even if they are inferior) with increase export like India.

Our obsession over dollar to naira exchange rate is because of our overdependence on import. We need to grow our local cpacity in a radical but strategic way.

We have a huge population. To move everyone away from poverty will require radical but painful decisions that were made in China, India and other high population third world countries that have grown in recent times.

How and why exactly do we try to justify and celebrate mediocrity??

"The poverty rate is the ratio of the number of people (in a given age group) whose income falls below the poverty line; taken as half the median household income of the total population"

-Now with an economy out of reccession..
-15m jobs lost..(white/blue collar)
-Declared world poverty capital..
-Double digit inflations..
-Population increase as affirmed
-farms settlement disputes..
-internally displaced persons running in millions..
-9years stuck Minimum wage

With the above mentions, could the average Nigerian income of the median household which is the worlds preferable method of calculating poverty ratio have increased or decreased?

I agree with your analysis, but don't forget, This is Nigeria

Nigerians have a special affinity for miracles, like snake swallowing billions, or a pastor who bullet could not penetrate because of odeshi

The positive effect of certain economic policies take a while to manifest, but many Nigerians never believe because alot of these manifestations are not miraculous.

What kind of nonsense talk is this ? These Buharist are truly some disillusioned mind wrecks .... How does anyone even twist such data ... OP for your information there are 3 primary data points when it comes to evaluating poverty there is the extreme Abject poverty data point which bracket those living below 50 cents a day and then there is the Abject poverty data point which has those living below 1 dollars a day then we have standard poverty data point of those living below 5 dollars a day ... For your information under the inept Buhari govt Nigeria exceeded India for the first time in extreme abject poverty with over 90 million Nigerians living below 50 cents a day !!!!!! ..When it comes to abject poverty we have about 150 million Nigerian living under 1 dollars today and this include this OP and most members of his family ... For figures of those living under 5 dollars a day Nigeria has about 170 million of those taking that our population is estimated to be about 200 million ... The factoid that poverty has increased under Buhari and not decreased like this deceptive OP is trying to lie about by trying to say India's poverty reduced that's why Nigeria surpassed them hahahahahah grin grin
