Following an alarm raised by the Director General of the Ambode Mandate Support Group (AMSG), Hon Hakeem Sulaimon, that an elaborate plan had been hatched by some All Progressives Congress (APC) leaders in Lagos state to rig the governorship direct primary election scheduled to hold on Monday, the APC leadership at the national headquarters may have decided to take proactive steps to ensure a level playing field for the two aspirants left in the race.

Babajide Sanwo-Olu is challenging the incumbent Governor Akinwunmi Ambode for the party’s gubernatorial ticket.

The Governor’s Advisory Council (GAC), the highest decision making body in Lagos APC at a meeting chaired by Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Saturday, endorsed Sanwo-Olu as its preferred candidate to fly the party’s flag during the general election in 2019.

At a rally on Sunday in Lagos, Sulaimon had alerted APC National Chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole “to the desperate moves to fraudulently deny Governor Ambode the ticket.” He claimed that the rigging machinery was being perfected, and that the “source of the company which printed the party’s permanent membership cards for the election was questionable.”

Investigations conducted by make it showed that the cards might have been printed by Information Technology Data Network Limited while Bisoye Bibi-Coker was said to be the contractor. When make it called Bisoye, she said she was busy and asked our correspondent to call her later. She neither confirmed nor deny her involvement in the project. A national leader of APC is said to have substantial interest in the company.

A source at the national headquarters of the party said the national leadership of APC was not taking the allegation lightly, particularly since a crucial process which ought to have been taken to validate the integrity of the cards was skipped in the case of Lagos State.

Said the source: “Ideally, when the permanent cards are printed by the contractors, they needed to deliver them at the national headquarters so that the secretariat can validate the cards based on the membership of the party and integrate the cards with our data system. This process was not followed and the cards were delivered directly to Lagos APC.”

An unconfirmed report said the permanent members’ cards were already being distributed ahead of Monday’s governorship primary election in Lagos.

It was learnt that the National Chairman of the party was involved in the attempt to find a solution. It was further gathered that an attempt would be made to retrieve the cards for proper documentation but if this failed, the party may decide to use the membership slips.

This, it was gathered, was what was used for the presidential primary.

At a world press conference he addressed in Lagos on Sunday, Governor Ambode called on the leadership of APC to ensure a level playing field and urged that all members of the party in the state should be eligible to vote.

He also asked all thugs to stay away from voting centres.

The strong man of Lagos politics, Asiwaju Tinubu in a statement he issued on Sunday on the election, said he would abide by the will of the people.

A source hinted that if all issues on the permanent members’ cards were not resolved satisfactorily, party’s leaders may decide to postpone the direct primary election.
