WE THE UNDERSIGNED WOULD LIKE TO BRING YOUR ATTENTION TO

A statement made by Senator Godswill Akpabio while speaking at the funeral of his grandmother-in-law in Enugu on Saturday, 18th of August 2018. In his words, “IN 2019 WARSAW SHALL SEE WAR AND WAR SHALL SEE WARSAW.” He repeated this statement when a political aspirant visited him for consultation shortly after that and also in the glare of the public during his mobilization rally at Ibom Plaza, Uyo.

The statement which was widely reported in the traditional and online media; is a threat by the Distinguished Senator to take over reins of power in Akwa Ibom State in the same manner the Germans overran Warsaw, Poland during World II tragedy.

It is therefore worrisome that 73 years after that sordid tragedy in Warsaw, a former Governor and serving Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria would publicly declare his intentions to visit such calamity of the peace-loving people of his homeland.

Though, many who are not familiar with the self-styled strongman of Akwa Ibom politics may not accord any serious attention to the statement, the citizens and residents of the state who witnessed the reign of terror that characterized the eight years tenure of Senator Akpabio as Governor from 2007 to 2015 cannot take such utterances as empty threats.

Recall that following the recent change of political allegiance to the All Progressive Congress (APC) by Senator Godswill Akpabio, the unfolding events have increasingly taken an alarming dimension with spates verbal missiles that are capable of provoking violence and civil disorder being hauled publicly.

Against this background and considering the historical antecedents of Senator Akpabio, we wish to state as follows:

1. That the statements made by the Senator Godswill Akpabio in full glare of the press is a declaration of war on the good people of Akwa Ibom.

2. That although we know the Senator does not tolerate opposition of any hue or shade and goes to any length to attempt to exterminate his political opponents, the good people of Akwa Ibom State never expected him to descend to this all-time low of declaring war on them in the pursuit of his political goals.

3. That having declared ‘war’ on the people who gave him the opportunity to be their governor for eight years, Akpabio should not be taken for granted. A common slogan during his administration was ‘what money cannot do; more money can do’. For him, every and any opposition must be crushed by all means. 4. That Akwa Ibom people, whose majority are more at home with the PDP are not with Akpabio in his latest political adventure, as such, it is not impossible that desperate politicians working with him, may be mapping out violence strategies to snatch victory during the 2019 general elections. Rumors are already rife that arms and ammunitions are being stock-piled to unleash mayhem on the people.

5. That the rumors may not be unfounded, given that during the rally hosted at Ikot Ekpene Stadium in honor of an APC governorship hopeful, Mr. Nsima Ekere, shortly before Akpabio’s defection, the organizers presented real guns and daggers as souvenirs to the honouree. The presentation was made in front the hundreds of people in the arena and the millions who watched at home with dismay on the live national broadcast on the Nigerian Television Authority Network service.

6. That possibly, to prepare grounds for the launch of the mayhem, the Media Aide to Senator Akpabio, Anietie Ekong raised a false alarm on the social media about gunmen attack on the Ukana, Essien Udim residence of the former governor.

7. That the Police Report which dismissed the alarm as false underscored the belief of the people who saw through the lies almost immediately it was posted on social media. Akwa Ibom people are conversant with the political antics and evil capabilities of Senator Akpabio.

8. That the only troubled spots in Akwa Ibom State; in the last three years, are in Ikot Ekpene Senatorial District where the Senator Akpabio comes from.

9. That the Senator has never supported efforts by the state Government’s efforts or made efforts to address the security situation in the area which he represents in the senate.

10. That while social and economic activities in most of these areas are almost at a standstill by menace of the militants, the Senator has been freely patrolling those areas with his campaign train. It is therefore not inconceivable that the militants may be the Senator’s foot soldiers which his is grooming to unleash terror on the rest of the state.

11. That the people of Akwa Ibom State are all living witnesses to the brutal and gruesome manner Senator Akpabio framed up a Commissioner; Prof. Chris Ekong that served during his administration and detained him for over 3 years on cooked up murder charges.

12. That Akwa Ibom State, under the administration of His Excellency, Mr. Udom Emmanuel, has since 2015 become a paradise of peace and security for the people, as opposed to the tenure of Governor Akpabio, when kidnapping, murder and sponsored violence were the order of the day.

The list of the many innocent Akwa Ibom citizens who fell victim of the ineptitude of that administration is still in the public domain. The many scares are still visible, families who lost their loved ones are just recuperating. It will a tragedy of a state to allow Senator Akpabio take us back into the dark days.

13. That while we do not contest the fact that as an individual, Senator Akpabio reserves the right to associate with whatever political party he chooses, we are worried that his body language, utterances and activities may not only compromise the peace of our state, but also reverse the socio-economic gains of the last three and a half years.

14. That under Governor Emmanuel, the economic fortune of our state has soared to a new height, with international investors setting up industries that are beginning to provide employment for our teeming youths and other hitherto unemployed citizens.

15. That owing to the conducive environment, engendered by the Udom Emmanuel administration, a National Bureau of Statistics report rated Akwa Ibom as the second largest destination for Foreign Direct Investment in Nigeria.

16. That the war-cry of Senator Akpabio is capable of jeopardizing such investments and cause the confidence of investors to wane. This could lead to an investors’ flight from Akwa Ibom State.

17. It is also not inconceivable that Senator Akpabio is seeking to destabilize the economic and socio-political serenity of the state in a last-ditch attempt to cover up illegalities perpetrated during his 8 years tenure as governor.

18. Recently, recently the Senator made news headlines, for not only spuriously award the contract for the construction of a 4-Star hotel at over 100% the actual cost but appropriating 95% of the contract sum thereafter abandoning the hotel at 64% completion. This only one of such obnoxious transactions perpetrated by Senator Akpabio’s Administration.

19. That since our dear Senator made a personal choice to jump ship in a treacherous manner, we appeal that he should please not promote violence and civil disobedience in in a state that has enjoyed comparative since he vacated office.

20. That the sheer number of people who have come out to condemn his recent political move as ill-advised should at least give him an inkling that he had moved over to a wrong path, in the context of Akwa Ibom polity.

21. That as Akwa Ibom and indeed Nigeria prepares for the all-important 2019 general elections, the least that the people expect from a Senator of Chief Akpabio’s standing, is to contribute, in words, deeds and influence, to the peaceful conduct of free, fair and acceptable elections.

22. The utterances of Senator Akpabio are already generating unnecessary tension and heating up the polity of Akwa Ibom State. We passionately appeal to the International Community, United Nations Organization, The African Union, the Commonwealth of Nations, the Diplomatic Corps and World Leaders to:
 Thoroughly investigate the activities of the Distinguished Senator while in office and during his tenure as a serving senator
 As a matter of urgency and necessity heighten surveillance on the activities of the Senator.
 Publicly speak up against the crisis he is brewing against humanity in Akwa Ibom State.

23. We know that Senator Akpabio would stop at nothing to gain victory, even if it means breaking the society and setting it on fire. The peace-loving and hospitable people of Akwa Ibom count on your timely intervention.
