By Godfrey Bivbere

Nigeria has lost opportunity of exporting 1.4 million tons of coal from the middle belt area of the country to Ghana annually, the Nigerian Export Import Bank, NEXIM has said.

Speaking at the Sub-regional workshop and joint committee meeting organized by the Union of African Shippers Council in conjunction with the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development, UNCTAD, Technical Adviser to the Managing Director of the bank, Hope Yongo, said that the logistics of moving the consignment from Nigeria to Ghana is hindered.

Yongo explained that the Ghanaian government needed 2,000 tones every month to power its second coal plant which would have brought the annual coal demand from Nigeria to 1.4 million tones.

He said there is no shipping link along the sub-region, noting that cargo movement amongst the countries in the region had to first go to Europe before finding their way back resulting in very expensive transportation cost.

He also stressed that there is no rail link in the region and that the only means of transportation of goods presently is by road which is more expensive as a result of the condition of the roads and the hindrances along the route.

He further noted that to move 2,000 tons of coal by road every month will require 43,000 trucks, a situation which is unimaginable.

As a result of the hindrances, the Ghanaian government had to resort to shipping the needed cargo from Australia.

Just like how our crude oil first finds its way abroad, then comes back to us as refined products. When we have serious leaders we’ll know. We have failed to create new opportunities for wealth in the midst of abundance, even when faced with imminent recession and high poverty and unemployment in the country.

This is a weird situation if its true. Nigeria could ship the 2 tons of coal there if the Ajaokuta Warri rail line was ready. The numbers are incorrect since Nigeria's total coal production isnt even 500 tons. Kogi produces 322,959.69 tons and Gombe produces 74,254.67 as of 2017.

Ps: Does Ghana use coal power?

Nobody is stopping you from mining the coal. Get your license and explore. Ebonyi has alot of mining activity. The Federal government could care less who supplies them with tax revenue ask the oil producers in SE.

Private mining companies are mining in Gombe, private companies are mining in Kogi, the FG is not known to mine any solid mineral anywhere. Is there anything (human or spirit) stopping anyone from mining coal in Enugu?... Who is marginalising who?

After the mining, proceeds will be shared among those dormant unproductive states up North

Make each region develop at its pace with its God given natural resources

Lol... Nothing is currently being produced but your worry is that 'if' something is produced, the proceeds will be shared with dormant unproductive states up north?... What about the dormant unproductive states down south who also take share of proceeds for producing nothing?... Even this comment you quoted mentions that Kogi and Gombe (north) are mining coal but Enugu (south) which sits on the largest coal deposits is just sitting and waiting for proceeds to be shared. Na wa for reasoning!

We hear of illegal mining everyday. Something must be exchanging hands somewhere.

Its hard to believe this. A lot of Nigerians and Nigerian companies ship tonnes of crude oil and refined petroleum products to Ghana by sea? I think it will be better to say, there's no Nigerian company interested to ship coal to Ghana.

Is there some sort of special infrastructure needed for that ? People ship things to other west African states from Nigeria. There is a link. Or what are they using ?

Demand! African countries do not trade among each other, reason the link between countries in the continent is poor.

Port Harcourt came into existence to allow shipping coal from Enugu to UK.

While I agree but I would rather advocate we use our coal to generate electricity for ourselves... Haba... We are still in darkness here and someone is talking about selling what will give us power?

Why must we sell everything? What will be left for us?

don't mind them... They hardly talk about the coal city but I would prefer we use it to generate electricity than selling it.
