The Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu has been blamed for the rumpus over the conduct of National Assembly primary election in Enugu State, which arose from the introduction of a suspicious letter from the national chairman of Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

While aspirants for the election had readied themselves for the primary, the Deputy Senate President was said to have introduced the spurious letter, which purportedly declared that incumbent federal legislators have been granted automatic tickets.

However no sooner had the primary, which lasted into the night, held than it was discovered that the national chairman, Prince Uche Secondus, never signed any such letter or made the dubious and undemocratic declaration.

Already the discovery of underhand methods employed in the conduct of the controversial primary has set PDP in a bid confusion, especially against further discovery that unknown to the state governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, Ekweremadu was using subterfuge to plant his loyalist in strategic positions in the state.

Hints to Ekweremadu’s schemes came to light in Enugu East Senatorial district, where the deputy senate president wanted to railroad Senator Gilbert Nnaji back to the Senate for a record third term against former governor Chimaroke Nnamani, ostensibly to prepare him (Nnaji) for the governorship poll in 2023.

But for the insistence of Governor Ugwuanyi that the Nnamani, who won the primary should not be substituted, Ekweremadu would have got away with his covert designs through the dubious letter from PDP national chairman.

However, aspirants from Enugu North Senatorial district were not lucky, because the development has left the National Assembly primary inconclusive and subject to possible litigations.

Already, a coalition of women groups, Women Arise, has condemned the outcome of PDP’s National Assembly primary election in Enugu State, lamenting that desperate politicians in the state showed their disdain for the womenfolk.

In a statement, the convener and national president of the coalition, Princess May Nwabueze, said: “We watched with keen interest the National Assembly primary election in Enugu State conducted by the PDP and we are sad to note the unjust treatment meted out on women.

“It is curious that out of the all House of Representatives and Senatorial positions in Enugu State, the party did not deem it fit to consider a single woman.

This is coming at a time we are talking about deepening the political process and we expect that the PDP should be on the vanguard.”

WomenArise said that it discovered to their chagrin that “at least five women presented themselves for the National Assembly primary elections, but in what we consider as a slap on the faces of all the Women, who of course constitute the bulk of the voting population, the PDP shut the door against the women, manipulated the process and ensured they were not even given the opportunity to test their popularity.

“It is saddening that an election slated to take place in the broad daylight was manipulated to start by 9 p.m. when the majority of the voters, especially the women, had deserted the venue of the exercise, thereby allowing armed thugs to have a field day.

“We, therefore, appeal to the party to reconsider its decisions for the purpose of equity and natural justice. It should not be unmindful of the implications of total exclusion of women in the political process.”

While commending the state governor, Hon. Ugwuanyi for his commitment towards deepening the democratic space in Enugu State, the women decried the continuing attempt by the deputy Senate President to undermine the governor’s leadership by engaging in clandestine activities to plant his cronies.

The women group also enjoined Ugwuanyi not to retain the state’s Deputy Governor, Cecelia Ezeilo, as his running mate in the 2019 governorship election, saying one who does not support women inclusion in the state’s politics does not deserve to be the deputy governor.

“That woman, Ezeilo, has never supported women inclusion in Enugu politics. Indeed, Enugu State has no deputy governor.

If Ugwuanyi picks her as his running mate, then we the women would massively vote against him and he would lose the election,” the group added.

Also a former Enugu North Senatorial aspirant, Chief Chinedu Eya, has called on the leadership of the PDP, to as a matter of urgency, cancel the just concluded party’s primary elections for Udenu/Igboeze North Federal constituency.

Eya contended that the election, which produced Engr. Atigwe Simon, was a sham and fraught with undemocratic tenets, wondering why an election slated to take place in the broad daylight was manipulated to start by 9 p.m. when the majority of the voters had deserted the venue of the exercise, with armed thugs forcing them to submit their eligibility identification cards, which was eventually used to manipulate the system.

In a statement by his Media aide, Gwiyi Solomon, Chief Eya noted, “Only an urgent decision from the PDP leadership can help resuscitate the people’s faith in our Democratic system.”

Why will anybody be surprised about that? It has been the PDP method over the years. They don't allow for strong contest which would even help strengthen the party. He forgot that having Chimaroke Nnamani is a big plus for the party in Enugu state, a far more popular candidate than the so called Nnaji who is hardly heard in the Senate.

PRESS RELEASE BY THE ENUGU STATE YOUNG GRADUATE
ASSOCIATION (ESYGA) 4TH OCT. 2018.

We the members of Enugu State Young Graduate
Association (ESYGA) wish to reject in clear terms the
unfortunate recycling of old politicians in Enugu state. We in
ESYGA having met and reviewed the political events in our
state in the recent time hereby decry the various choices
made by the ruling party, the people Democratic party PDP,
across the state in the immediate past primary election for
2019 general election.

It is clear from the result of the primary election that the party is hellbent on imposing on the indigenes of Enugu state several politicians who have been rejected by their constituents for obvious irredeemable failure in the leadership of their people.

The said primary election for the national and state assembly members - an obvious hatchet job of the ruling
party, has produced candidates that are notorious for non
performance and worrisomely corrupt politicians in some
instances. We wonder on what ground should PDP clear a
former governor who among other heinous crime committed against the state, stoled the fund from the excess crude account meant for the development of five local government areas including Isi Uzo, Aninri, Awgu, Igbo Etiti and Enugu south, talk more of nominating him to run for Enugu East senatorial Election. It is on record that the former governor Dr Chimaroke Nnamani never denied any of the allegation of financial crime he committed against the people of Enugu state as he has also been made to forfeit four of his companies to the tune of over 21billion naira plus another 5.3billion money laundry fraud by the economic and
financial crime commision EFCC.

How did PDP clear and seek to return a certain Dr Patrick
Asadu of Nsukka/Igbo Eze south federal constituency
despite the public outcry of his monumental abysmal
performance by his people?

We however must salute the deputy senate president Dr. Ike
Ekweremadu for his relatively good representation of his
constituency, but we are worried that the distinguished
senator is seeking to return to the red chamber for the fifth
time. It is our most considered and sincere opinion that the
distinguished senator should take his well deserved role as a statesman in Enugu politics to guide and direct younger
leaders for effective leadership in the state. But the fact that
Dr Ekweremadu is by this latest quest of his portraying
himself as a sit-tight politician is highly condemnable.

The Enugu state young graduate Association will continue to
be the voice of our most exasperated people of Enugu state
who have unfortunately been relegated to the statues of
spectator in a game they should be active players. By this
release we stand to prove that Enugu state is not bereft of
people with enough civilization and enlightenment to stand
for what is right no matter whose ox is gored. To this effect
we are seriously mobilizing our people across the seventeen
local government areas to vote against any candidates that
doesn't meet the quest of our people no matter the political
party involved. We are calling on all people of good will to
rise up against the oppression by this elite cabal that has
unquenchable determination to always bring Enugu politics
to public ridicule.

EMERGENCE OF ATIKU AND BUHARI'S CHANCE OF WINNING 2019 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION IN PERSPECTIVE!
It is no longer news that Buhari is the candidate of APC while Atiku is the candidate of PDP in 2019. It is also a known fact that both men are in their 70s, they are both Fulanis, Muslims and Herdsmen. Nigerians are now faced with a very narrow choice to make.
While Buhari is of APC, Atiku is of PDP. Before 2015, a choice of party would have made a lot of difference in this election but after almost 4 years of APC, I am now of a firm opinion that there is no difference between APC and PDP. Apart from logo difference of broom and umbrella, both parties use the same colour, both parties are run by same men who are merely criss-crossing the two parties. I have not seen any ideological differences in the way both parties run things.
Both parties don't know the feelings of the masses and don't believe in the power of the people. Both parties believed in using impunity in doing things. Both parties imposed candidates, both parties conjured figures and rigg elections to sweet their purposes, both parties have almost the same ideology. Therefore, the winner of 2019 Presidential election would be determined not by ideology as the two parties are one and the same and can only be described as two sides of same coin.
2019 election would largely be determined by a number of factors which include the way APC/Buhari has kept to the promises they made to Nigerians in 2014 and 2015. Nigerians will look around to see whether power has improved. APC promised 40k megawatts in 4 years. Nigeria will see whether there is improvement. APC promised creation of jobs and poverty reduction. Nigeria will look at what the government has achieved in this regard. APC promised to bring an end to medical tourism, Nigerians will see whether this has been achieved. APC promised affordable housing for all, Nigerians will take a look at this sector.
On the part of PDP, Nigerians will cast their minds back to pre PMB era and make a choice whether to continue with PMB or take a detour with their destinies. Nigerians will look at the era of Boko Haram and bombing in Abuja, Sulajah etc. Nigerians will look at job creation and poverty reduction or otherwise. Nigerians will look at the economy as it then was and see whether it was worthwhile then and whether it is better today. Nigerians will look at the achievements of the governors of both parties where the held sway in the various States.
I have noticed the Trend of Buhari campaign Media organisation and their approach at trying to demarket Atiku. I wish to state without mincing words that the approach of trying to label Atiku as corrupt, not being able to visit America, spent money to get nomination is a bad approach. Nigerians will not buy that. This same Atiku donated vehicles and cash to PMB in 2015 and those gifts were collected without anyone making issue that Atiku is corrupt. My reason is that both candidates are of same origin, they both spent money to get nominated. Nobody can get a party ticket in Nigeria without spending money. Even with Direct Primary of PMB, money was still spent on nomination even though in some states where the exercise did not take place, the money entered private pockets.
I have also noted the approach of PDP in selling their market to Nigerians. I have not seen much insults being rained on Mr. President. They are only asking his handlers for his achievements in the last 3 and half years. This is not to say that insults are still not being passed. But their approach is better.
I wish to call on the two sides to make the 2019 campaign robust and issue based, Nigerians now have statistical data about the two parties and the two gladiators. It is a great achievement for Fulanis in Nigeria to have their own nominated by the two major political parties and I congratulate them for this feat achieved. Head or tail, is Fulani-Muslim, so why should we make enemies for ourselves in the contest of two brothers of same parent just because we want to campaign for our party? Other Nigerians shoud be wiser and follow the campaign based on issue with peace. May God give Nigeria the best in 2019.
