Oga you have a point but you're not entirely right. Not all these cars are for refurbishment. Some are scrapped and sold as spare parts

Most of the tokumbo cars you buy in Nigeria were like this in the USA. but the difference is that they fixed it in US before they arrive to Nigeria. While some other are brought back as is to Nigeria before it is repaired. The reason for the repair is made in Nigeria is simply cost. Not just the cost to repair but the cost of clearing. It is cheaper to clear a damaged vehicle than clear a running vehicle. A typical example is buying a 2018 SUV that is damaged in USA at $4000. You decided to repair it in USA and get it back to good condition. When you bring it into Nigeria, custom will not believe the cost of the vehicle so they will charge you averagely. which makes it little more expensive. However, the advantage of fixing in US is very simple, part are bought brand new, tools for repair are available and the skill is there to make it look like brand new.
If you want to become importer of cars in damaged condition of parts of damaged cars, contact me jinxet2000@yahoo.com I deal with auto. I buy and sell non-damaged cars but there is opportunity in damaged and fixed cars and parts.

They have worst ones even in America. All these cars comes in replaceable pieces so it's always easy to assemble them together. If there's a major frame damage then it will be sold as parts. It's always good to buy cars with front damage because they are easy to assemble.

CarGuideNG:
Great topic.

An earlier topic by the famous Explorers revealed the same situation on the forum

https://www.nairaland.com/4378034/shocking-transformation-some-crashed-cars

CarGuideNG always encourages clients to get a VIN report, and have any vehicles inspected by an expert before purchase.

We go a step further, to provide detailed photos of the original damage to the vehicle prior to import to Nigeria, with detailed history reports and airbag/auction information. A premium history report from us for the above vehicles would include pictures revealing the extent of the damage, and much more. We also provide history for vehicles from multiple geographical regions including but not limited to Canada, the USA, parts of Europe, and the Middle East

There are 2 aspects to consider when purchasing a Tokunbo vehicle:

- History:

Best assessed by VIN checks and Vehicle History Reports.

- Present condition:

Best assessed by expert and thorough physical inspection.

The history is just as important as the present condition, and one should not be done without the other. They work hand-in-hand to create a complete picture of the state of a vehicle.

When a CarFax report states that a vehicle was routinely serviced and lists the consecutive dates of oil change, brake service, transmission repairs or work, airbag repair or work, suspension service or repairs, or that some electrical service or repairs were performed, that clearly contributes a great deal to the present state of the car.

VIN reports have been commonplace since the 1990s in the USA and Canada, where most vehicles are imported to Nigeria from. Today no smart used car buyer would buy a car without a VIN or history report in the USA or Canada, even most dealers already have the reports at hand for any prospective customers, hence the popular jingle "Show me the CarFax!".

Relying on just the VIN or just the inspection alone would likely lead to an incomplete impression of the state of the vehicle.

Consider

A buyer looking for a vehicle contacts dealers who have about 5 models of the vehicle in their stock.

A

The dealers send the VIN for all 5 vehicles to the buyer who runs VIN checks and does some research for all 5 using the VIN, before visiting the dealers premises to see the vehicles and arrange inspection for 2 or 3 based on the information available from the VIN reports.

B

The buyer spends more time, money and logistics to arrange inspections with no VIN report beforehand for all the vehicles, which has to be done for all of them to decide which vehicles are in the best condition.

A would definitely be less expensive, more effective and lead to the client purchasing a vehicle in better condition.

Consider again

The VIN check reveals that 1 of the vehicles was flood damaged, 2 were in accidents involving the airbags, while 2 were clean titles with fair mileage and no other negative history.

Instead of the client to pay an expert for inspection for 5 vehicles, he may pay for just 2 or 3, based on the VIN reports. It's not a 100% approach, but it is much more likely to lead to a good purchase.

For a flood damaged vehicle, which even some "expert" inspection may not detect, a good way to establish that would be a VIN report.

In some situations it may not be possible to get a VIN check for a car, for example cars from some parts of the world. In such cases the buyer has no option but to rely on the inspection alone.

To conclude, both approaches are necessary to achieve the aim of making a good vehicle purchase, and a VIN report before inspection increases the effectiveness of the inspection.
