BREAKING: Court stops NLC, TUC’s planned strike by solaugo1: 1:23pm On Nov 02, 2018

The National Industrial Court of Nigeria has ordered the organised labour, comprising the Nigerian Labour Congress and the Trade Union Congress not to embark on its indefinite strike scheduled to commence on November 6.

Justice Sanusi Kado, on Friday, gave the order in a ruling on an ex parte application moved on behalf of the Federal Government by the Solicitor-General of the Federation and Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Justice, Mr. Dayo Apata.

Agreeing with Apata, Justice Kado ruled that if the strike is allowed it will lead to huge economic loss to both public and private institutions and may jeopardise the health of many Nigerians who would not be able to access health facilities during the period.

The organised labour had threatened to commence an indefinite strike action to press for the increase in the national minimum wage from the current N18,000.

Apart from the NLC and the TUC, the NGF is also joined as a defendant in the suit.

Justice Kado adjourned the matter till November 8 for the hearing of the motion on notice seeking the interlocutory injunction to stop the strike.

The judge ordered that the court order and other papers be filed on all the defendants.

Great! NLC and organise labour movement should continue to engage the government. Hopefully, an acceptable compromise will be reached soon.

NLC should not obey this court order. The govt, particularly the state govts, are very unserious about minimum wage increase.

By going to court and still talking of negotiation, the FG is acting in bad faith

Both NLC and TUC are sick in the head. All of them have been compromised.

what's great about this?

The Nigerian worker has been incapacitated economically since the inception of this administration with their ill inform policies that has left the naira with little or no value.

States government on thier part contributed by upward reviewing charges in their various educational institutions. Effort of Labour leaders ought to be commended for agreeing to that paltry N30k compare to the cost of living as at today.

I agree state governors are not serious enough but I won't blame FG for rushing to court to obtain this order. Labour going on strike at this point in time will affect governance seriously. Election is early next year and government just started implementing the capital component of the 2018 budget. Nationwide strike will slow down so many things including our economy that is still recovering from the last recession.

The danger is that NLC might refuse to obey the order and it won't be their first time.

I hope a resolution is arrived at quickly

Purchased court order! Nigeria's judiciary are so confused that they can almost grant any injunction no matter how ridiculous such order is. I'm waiting for a day they'll grant a temporary injunction for a man to stop sleeping with his wife "until the suit has been entertained". gringrin

The Industrial Court should also, compel the FG and all 36 States governments to pay #30, 000 to the Nigerians workers as a minimum wage now without further delay.

This drama is being planned by NLC and FGN.
Watch how NLC will come out to say that as law abiding citizens, the strike has been suspended.

Just as the courts have no right to stop a protest, they also have no right to stop a strike action

The corrupt court can't stop labor from fighting for their rights.
Buhari's feeding budget is 1.5 billion naira per year, yet he doesn't want to pay workers
a meager 30k per month.
Not fair.
