As part of the country’s 50th independence anniversary celebration, the federal government will today confer national honours award on 186 Nigerians in Abuja for the year 2009.

The award, which is usually given to outstanding Nigerians for their contributions to national development, would take place at the International Conference Centre in Abuja.

Thirteen of the awardees will bag the CFR honours, while 27 will get the CON award; 43 will be awarded the OFR honours, while 46 will be awarded OON. Some 22 will receive the MFR honours, while 25 will bag the MON award. The other seven awardees will be conferred with the Federal Republic Medal.

The former Chief of General Staff, Mike Akhigbe will, together with the Chief Justice of the Federation, Aloysius Katsina-Alu, as well as second republic senate president, Joseph Wayas, receive the GCON award. The past speaker of the House of Representatives, Patricia Etteh, will receive the CFR, alongside a predecessor, Ghali Umar Na’Abba; Chief of Staff to the president, Mike Oghiadhome; and former finance minister, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.

Also on the list approved by President Goodluck Jonathan are the governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Sanusi Lamido Sanusi; chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Farida Waziri; chairman of African Petroleum Plc, Femi Otedola; a former petroleum minister, Tam David-West, who had declined the award of CON, among others.

A statement by the national honours award committee in Abuja said there is no recipient for the nation’s highest honours of GCFR, as this was reserved for serving heads of state, while three people will get the GCON award.
