No fewer than 2, 000 Lagos residents, including the unemployed and the undergraduates, have been pencilled down to benefit from vacation job arrangement.

The programme, under the Enterprise Registration and Identification Agents, is expected to gulp over N57m.

Speaking at a press briefing in Lagos on Tuesday to unveil the strategy for the programme, the state Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Mr. Adeniyi Oyemade, said when engaged, the prospective candidates were expected to comb the streets of Lagos to enumerate business enterprises for the purpose of adequate planning by government.

He said the 2,000 undergraduates and 40 supervisors would identify and enumerate corporate organisations and enterprises across the state within a period of eight weeks.

He therefore called on interested applicants to go to the commerce ministry at the state secretariat in Alausa, Ikeja, to obtain the application form before Friday, which is the closing date.

Oyemade said, ”Each agent will be paid the sum of N10, 000 allowance monthly and N1, 000 as weekly transport allowances, while each supervisor will also collect N10, 000 monthly.”

The commissioner said the exercise would run from August 2 to September 24, 2010.

He said it had become necessary to do the exercise now so as to ensure correct data bank of business enterprises.

He added, ”The primary purpose of data generation of businesses in the state is for economic planning and youth empowerment through provision of jobs for the teeming youths particularly the undergraduates.”

Oyemade disclosed that in the last exercise, 250, 000 enterprises were enumerated across the state, adding that the new directory would be sold for N3, 000.

He stated that the government was committed to promoting small and medium scale enterprises, saying that when the directory was completed, it would serve as a compendium of information for investors in the state.

Oyemade said the 2, 000 undergraduates and graduates to be recruited for the two months job would be trained for three days before they would be sent to enumerate the enterprises.

He called on corporate bodies and SMEs in the state to support government‘s initiative by cooperating with the agents through the provision of useful information that would guide the state government in planning for the development of SMEs and also provide the enabling environment for businesses to thrive.
