The Yobe state government is to subsidise the fare for 2,997 pilgrims from the state for the 2010 hajj.
A statement issued yesterday in Damaturu, the state capital, by the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Hajj Matters, Alhaji Muhammad Potiskum, stated that the fares would be subsidised to the tune of N20 million.

Potiskum said the subsidy was intended to assist the pilgrims.

He noted that the government was committed to providing comfort to the pilgrims
during the hajj in Saudi Arabia.


The special assistant maintained that the government would continue with its practice of securing accommodation for pilgrims near the two holy mosques in Mecca and Medina.
With the subsidy, pilgrims expected to pay N591,769 as announced by the National Hajj Commission are now to pay N586,000, saving N5,769 for each of them.
Similarly, pilgrims paying for medium seats are now to pay N511,000 as against the N516,766 earlier billed them while the least category of pilgrims are to pay N476,000.
