For example, old model Mercedes 200 (I4) (flat boot) would consume about the same fuel as a 2005 Mercedes C230 Kompressor (I4). So, engine a car is fitted with plays a role, not just model.
That is not to say that technology hasn't improved to reduce fuel consumption, emissions and so on.

Grew up driving benz cars from the 190 to the w124..it was until I handled a Japanese car(EOD) that I realised the difference..the car felt light and the steering handling felt really odd to me..it just lacked that overall balance and sturdiness of benz..

What will you say about someone who just bought a highlander but would rather prefer his old E class to the highlander? Highlander is now for wifey while he is planning to upgrade to an ML.
