South-east ASUU Begins Strike Over Pay by idmanzik: 3:00pm On Jul 27, 2010
The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) in the South-East, has embarked on an indefinite strike action over the non-implementation of the 2009 ASUU-government agreements and full implementation of the CONUSS awards and arrears.

The universities include the Abia State University, Uturu (ABSU); the Anambra State University, Uli (ANSU); the Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki; the Enugu State University of Technology (ESUT); and the Evan Enwerem University, Owerri (EEU\MSU).

This was contained in statement made available to the Nigerian Compass and signed by Dr. G. N Chima, Chairman ASUU-ABSU; Dr. C. Jaja Nwanogbo, Chairman ASUU-ANSU; Dr. Emeka Nwakpu, Chairman ASUU-EBSU; Dr. Vitalis Nwulu, Chairman ASUU-EEU/MSU; Barr. Agu Gab Agu, Chairman ASUU-ESUT; Dr. S.N Nzota, Zonal Coordinator, Owerri zone; and Prof. M. U Awoke, Zonal Coordinator Nsukka zone.

The South-East ASUU said that educational standards and infrastructures in the zone have been relegated to a terrifying background and currently suffering a most shameful neglect by the political leadership of the zone.

The statement noted that it was shameful that while state-owned universities in the South-West, South-South, North-East, North-Central and North-West were striving to make their universities centres of excellence, state universities in the South-East were being debased, bastardised and further relegated by narrow ethnic and clannish sentiments, with no steps taken to implement the 2009 FG-ASUU agreement.

According to the statement, “The South-East universities hereby resolve based on the NEC directive issued at its meeting at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike to embark on a total and indefinite strike action in all the state universities in the South-East zone with effect from July 22, 2010 until the respective state universities implement the 2009 ASUU government agreement as well as fully implement the CONUASSS Awards and Arrears in all the state universities in the south-east.”

ASUU South-East also noted that it was only in the South-East zone that state-owned universities have lost touch with realities in the tertiary education sector of the country through the non-implementation of agreements meant to make universities more productive and become effectively established as centres of excellence such as the full implementation of the CONUASS Awards and 2009 FGN-ASUU Agreement.

STATE universities in the South-East Thursday began an indefinite strike.

The institutions are Abia State University, Uturu; Anambra State University, Uli; Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki; Enugu State University of Science and Technology, Enugu, and Evan Enwerem University, Owerri (formerly Imo state University).

At the Anambra State University, classrooms were empty.

Lecturers were absent.

Students were seen discussing in groups.

Anambra State Commissioner for Education Kay Onyechi described the situation as "unfortunate".

She said the government would resolve the crisis.

A communiqué signed by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) chairmen of the five universities read: "It is most shameful that while other geopolitical zones are striving to make their universities excellent, state universities in the South East are being debased, bastardised and further relegated by narrow ethnic and clannish sentiments."

The communiqué said the strike would not be suspended until the states implement the 2009 ASUU/government agreement.

The teachers also decried poor infrastructure.
