JAMB Announces Date For 2019 Registration by 12Ebisco: 4:21pm On Nov 29, 2018
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) on Thursday announced that registration for 2019/ 2020 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) will commence in December.

The Head of Media of the Board, Dr Fabian Benjamin, announced this while addressing newsmen during the conduct of promotion exercise for the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS), at the board’s Computer Based Test (CBT) Centre in Abuja,NAN reports.

According to Benjamin, no specific date has been fixed for the commencement of the registration yet.

He, however, said that plans were underway to do so as soon as possible as the board was initially waiting for the pronouncement of the presidency on the reduction of the examinations fee, which was formally announced on Wednesday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Federal Executive Council (FEC) on Wednesday approved the downward review of the examination registration fees from N5,000 to N3,500 effective from January 2019.

The Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, announced this after the meeting.

Benjamin said it was commendable what the President had done as he was someone, who had always had the interest of the masses at heart and would prove to ensure that no Nigerian was deprived of tertiary education.

” The president has overtime, expressed concern that the charges were high.

” Our consistent remittance has proven that something could actually be done and even if charges are reduced, examinations can still be conducted with no service suffering any issue of funding.

” The president has taken this bold step, we will see what happens after this reduction and if need be for further reduction, Mr President will do so in no distant time because he has concerns for the ordinary Nigerian on the streets. ”

JAMB is another unfair system that needs to be reconsidered in Nigeria. Do students really have to write 4hrs exam to prove what they have learned in 3 years of senior secondary school? The result would not necessarily be a true reflection of the students' ability to do well in their chosen course.
Assessment of student over the 3 years of senior secondary school as shown in their SSCE is enough to attest to ones knowledge in any given subject. Then, the SSSC should be the only educational requirement for admission process in institutions of higher education.
Thereafter, students when admitted in universities are placed in general courses as prerequisites; Natural sciences, maths, English, Humanities, Arts, Social sciences and Liberal arts. This stage allows the student to explore different opportunities and make informed decisions base on gained exposure and performance.

Second year would be a time to complete the prerequisite requirements for the students department of choice. At the end of the year, students automatically know where they fit in, in terms of moving forward and excelling in a particular field. Those who need to put more effort would know and those who would have to reconsider their goals will do so.

In their third year, all the students are coming well grounded and focused for the core curriculum. They know exactly what to expect and are prepared. Course by course evaluation should be used to assess progress, allowing some courses to be prerequisites for others. They do not have to take a mandated bundle or load of courses in a given semester. Each student should be allowed to make progress based on their own pace but given a graduation time limit. What this does is that it allows students to get involved in other aspects of life. For instance, they could get a part time job to acquire real life experience in the chosen field. Some might even explore other vocations of interests and as such, maximizing their full potentials. Life does not have to be boxed by school work alone. Moreover, working would create a sense of responsibility and independence on these young people, enabling a head start in life.

Finally, in the fourth year and fifth year depending on the course, the students are well rounded for their profession having attended the necessary academic requirements and on the job experience. The issue of employers asking for years of experience from a fresh graduate would no longer be a hindrance in getting job.
