Abia gov calls for state police over kidnapping

AGAIN, the call for state police echoed at the weekend in Lagos with the Abia State Governor, Theodore Orji, insisting on having such a structure in order to tackle the security challenges facing the state.
Speaking at reception organised in his honour by Abia residents in Lagos, Orji said establishing a state police under the control of the state government would address security problems like kidnapping in the country.

At the event held at Adrao International School, Victoria Island and attended by eminent sons of Abia, which include, Rear Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu (rtd), Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), Azubuko Udah, the governor said the Abia State government had given all that it had, including providing maximum logistics to security agents working in the state as well as enacting laws that would help improve the security situation.
He called for the evaluation of the policing structure in the country by allowing state government-controlled police for the interest of the people.
Orji, who expressed his determination to personally carry arms to stop kidnappers from their illegal activities appealed to them to lay down their arms and dialogue with the government on their yearnings.
According to him, since the issue of security should not be left to government alone, Abia indigenes should contribute ideas that will completely eliminate the cankerworm in the state.

While thanking the Federal Government for sending more policemen and equipment to the state, leading to the reduction of crime, Orji said kidnapping was a national issue that is not peculiar to Abia State and therefore required collective efforts to check the menace.
The governor, however expressed joy that kidnapping that had hitherto hindered progress in the state was being controlled with the return of road contractors to site, especially in Abia, which is the hotbed of abductions.

Aside security issues, he said the state had made tremendous progress in the area of health and electricity with the acquisition of Alaoma General Hospital, which has been transformed into a specialist and diagnostic centre in partnership with a private firm in Lagos.
He added that the state government has built a 188 KVA power station at Osisioma in Aba in partnership with Geometrics Incorporated to ensure steady supply of power to the commercial nerve centre of the state and its environs.
On his political aspiration, the governor said, his desire to contest the 2011 polls was to take the state to higher levels having liberated the state from the powers strangling it.

In his remarks, former President of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Prof. Joe Irukwu, expressed happiness at the new dawn in the state and urged the governor to ensure that the right things were done in order to regain the state’s lost glory.
For former Foreign Affairs Minister, Gen. Ike Nwachukwu and renowned banker, Prof. Albert Orji, the governor should utilise the new dawn to print his name in gold through the provision of social amenities in the state.

While thanking the Federal Government for sending more policemen and equipment to the state, leading to the reduction of crime,

really. . . . and thatis going to fix anything? Does the East not already have the highest police officials present in it's region?
Ironically, he observed that the South-East zone has the largest police and military presence in the entire country.

Me think that Govt should look critically on the issue of state Police, but will state Govt be able to pay their salaries? Asking for state Police should mean that the states will be capable of equiping them and equally pay them well to discourage them from taking their usual settlements.

Ileke-Idi,

I shall call a spade a spade. You are a tribalist. Enjoy. Just mind your own business and worry about your people killing each other and the do or die politics in the southwest.

At least with kidnapping, Easterners do not kill their target. They just want money. Simply business. Not saying that is right though.

Orji is a complete failure. I don't how he can take Abia even an inch forward in his 2nd term. For almost 4 yrs the state has been n a rotten state. His call for state police is good but that doesn't mean he needs to win the next election. Let a better more competent person take over and implement those policies to improve the state.

Going by the farcical elections in neighboring Imo State, knowing where the Governor’s allegiance lies- Political-wise, does it surprise anyone that PDP swept the field even thus this same Governor is known to have grossly tortured and bludgeoned a journalist to almost death, are these the kind of men one would put armed law enforcement officer’s under. The answer is Capital NO.
Re: Abia Gov Calls For State Police Over Kidnapping by ChinenyeN(m): 1:34pm On Aug 09, 2010
KnowAll, is the force, being placed under the control of FG, any better? Aside from that, this shift in law enforcement control is highly welcomed, in my opinion. It would mark the beginning of the decentralization of authority, in Nigeria; a very necessary development.

Now i do believe this state needs to create "MINISTRY OF KIDNAPPING AND HOSTAGE TAKING" appoint a COMMISSIONER to match.

ehrrm okay. I'm going to give you the satisfaction of thinking I'm going to listen to you and "mind my business". Young man, you better behave yourself. this is politics not your living room. Nonsense.

Moving on. . . .

The only difference will be state controlled police, this doesn't guarantee a more efficient police system

A system must first be set up properly before it can be run efficiently.

Having state police as it is in the US where you have the most criminals.
New york police department, los angeles police department etc

In this case we will have Abia state police department, lagos state police department, rivers state police department etc.

America will not survive if they try running the type of police system we have been running here.

THAT KIDNAPPING STILL EXIST IN NIGERIA SHOW THAT OUR SECURITY APPARATUS IN THIS COUNTRY IS VERY DEFICIENT ,IN A NUT SHELL WE DONT HAVE GOOD INTELLIGENCE UNITS IN POLICE, ARMY, NAVY, AIRFORCE,SSS,CIVIL DEFENCE, ETC.

IT IS A BIG SHAME THAT AT 50YRS WE DONT HAVE GOOD INTELIGENCE TO STOP THIS MENACE ,YET WE CELEBRATE INDEPENDENCE,THIS KIND OF RUBBISH CANNOT BE SEEN IN ANY SERIOUS COUNTRY.HOW BIG IS ABA THAT KIDNAPPING WILL BE GOING THERE 247 AND WE ARE CELEBRATING 50YRS OF NO GROWTH.

WELL GOVERNORS, POLITICIANS ARE THE ONE CELEBRATING, FOR IF NOT INDEPENDENCE HOW THEY FOR STEAL MONEY WITHOUT GOING TO JAIL.

SENDING TROOPS TO ABA IS GOOD BUT THE REAL THING IS TO GET GOOD INTELLIGENCE UNITS AND IN LESS THAN A MONTH ROUND UP THESE EVIL PEOPLE AND JAIL THEM WITH THEIR SPONSORS
