There was no point going to work on Remembrance Day if you worked at Independence Building in the 1980s. The building overlooked the Cenotaph at Tafawa Balewa Square and it was usually cleared of people for security reasons. The roads leading to the building were usually closed to traffic on Remembrance Day.

Nowadays it's people who work at the Federal Secretariat that experience the problem.

My favourite Remembrance Day was in 1991, when the coffin of the Unknown Soldier was taken from the Cenotaph in Lagos and buried at the Cenotaph in Abuja.

The inspector general of police, Ibrahim Idris, made a lot of mistakes last year when he went to lay his wreath.
