Over the years, I've met a couple of people who believe that zobo is just 'colored poison water' with no reasonable health benefit. If you are one of those, then after reading this, you'll need to write some sort of an apology letter to the zobo community for false accusation.

That aside, zobo has been in the market right from time immemorial. It happens to be one of the oldest drinks in history especially in Nigeria. The drink can be found in nearly all the states of the Federation and also you will also find people who know NOTHING about the drink in all these places as well.

For those of us who don't know what zobo is, well, zobo is a an edible Hibiscus sabdariffa plant and a drink it is used to make.

Below are some health benefits of this amazing plant to our health;

#1: It Helps Curb Kidney Problems
When you want to sit down and analyze the cost of one kidney, you will then appreciate the fact that taking care of your kidneys will save you a whole lot of unrest and financial imbalance.

Doctors recommend zobo drink for patients with kidney disease and other kidney problems. It contains vital organic acids like citric acid, acetic acid, tartaric acids and maleic acid; all these acids help the kidneys function properly.

They help the kidney eliminate uric acid and oxalic acid, these are the two main causes of kidney stones and this, in turn, can lead to kidney damage and failure if not treated properly. It also eliminates other wastes from the kidneys and body.

NOTE: Sugar or any other artificial sweeteners should not be added when taking zobo for the health of your kidneys.

#2: Helps Prevent Cancer
At the mention of cancer, every heart begins to beat faster than the normal rate. Yes!! Everyone is scaRegular consumption of zobo drink increases the levels of antioxidants in the body thereby preventing and treating cancer. These antioxidants fight free radicals which cause oxidative damage and stress which later lead to cancer.

These antioxidants also boost the immune system and prevent cancer and other chronic and life-threatening diseases. Don’t add sugar or artificial sweeteners because they feed cancer cells.

#3: It Boosts the Immune System
Anything that weakens your immune system can lead to a secondary immunodeficiency disorder. Not enough protein in your diet can weaken your immune system. Your body also produces proteins when you sleep that help your body fight infection. For this reason, lack of sleep reduces your immune defenses.

The good news is that zobo drink is rich in vitamin C which fortifies the immune system and fights all kinds of diseases and infections. Regular intake of zobo drink will increase the levels of vitamin C in your body and thus empower your immune system.
Due to the high content of vitamin C in zobo drink, it can fight colds and coughs. It fights inflammation and kills bacteria and this is helpful in treating colds and coughs.

#4: It Fights Anemia
Anemia is a condition that develops when your blood lacks enough healthy red blood cells or hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is a main part of red blood cells and binds oxygen. If you have too few or abnormal red blood cells, or your hemoglobin is abnormal or low, the cells in your body will not get enough oxygen.

Hibiscus sabdariffa leaves have a rich content of iron, this mineral is needed to make new red blood cells and hemoglobin. This helps transport oxygen all through the body.

Those with low pack cell volume and anemia can start consuming zobo drink regularly to boost the levels of iron in their bodies. It also fights the symptoms of anemia like weaknesses and fatigue.

Niacin or vitamin B3 present in zobo leaves supports healthy functions of the brain and fights brain problems and mood disorder like depression.

How Formula Giants Are Breaking The Code

Have you heard of the International Code of Marketing of Breast Milk Substitutes?
The Code is an international set of recommendations, which regulates the marketing of breast-milk substitutes and in simple terms, it advocates that babies be breastfed and that any promotion of breast milk substitutes be banned.
The reasoning behind the creation and implementation of The Code is to protect and improve breastfeeding rates. The World Health Organization (WHO) states that breastfeeding is “unparalleled in providing the ideal food for infants” and research has found that over three quarters of a million lives would be saved yearly if breastfeeding was universally practised:

“THE PROTECTION, PROMOTION AND SUPPORT OF BREASTFEEDING RANK AMONG THE MOST EFFECTIVE INTERVENTIONS TO IMPROVE CHILD SURVIVAL. INCREASING BREASTFEEDING TO NEAR-UNIVERSAL LEVELS COULD SAVE MORE THAN 820 000 LIVES EVERY YEAR.”
