Developing signals have started emerging on the struggle for the leadership of the 9th National Assembly billed for inauguration in June.

SUNDAY PUNCH learnt that more lawmakers were expressing their interests by the day to preside over the chambers and be among the principal offices of the Senate and the House of Representatives.

An aide to one of the aspirants in the Senate, who is privy to the discussion in the All Progressives Congress caucus, said the ruling party had zoned the Senate presidency to the North-East and the Speaker of the House as well as the Deputy Senate presidency to the South-West.

The source disclosed that three ranking senators wanted to become deputy senate president.

According to the source, the leading aspirants in the South-West gunning for the Deputy Senate President seat are Senator Oluremi Tinubu, who is the wife of the APC National Leader, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, (Lagos Central); a former Senate Majority Leader, Senator Teslim Folarin (Oyo Central) and Senator Ajayi Boroffice (Ondo North).

The source stated, “The latest from the APC is that there is a zoning arrangement the party wants to implement, which the leaders seem to have agreed on. The North-East will produce the Senate President while the South-West will produce the Speaker.

“The South-East and South-South would be included at certain levels. It will be planned the same way it was done in 2015.

“Now that the South-West will produce deputy Senate president, the race is now between three ranking members from the geopolitical zone, namely Teslim Folarin, Oluremi Tinubu and Ajayi Boroffice.”

Also, a prominent APC member in the House from the North-East, who is part of those backing an aspirant to be speaker, disclosed that they had begun to lobby their colleagues in the chamber.

The lawmaker said although it was certain that Dogara would lose the Speaker’s seat, aspirants would not openly declare their bid for the seat until it was close to the end of the Speaker’s tenure.

The lawmaker added, “Although the APC might want to go for the old template; within the House, members from the North-East are insisting on having their slot as speaker. So, for the North-East, it is between Abdulrazak Namdas (Adamawa) and Mohammed Monguno (Borno). They are the two main contenders.

“For instance, Namdas came from the constituency of the presidential candidate of the PDP, former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, and he is the only one who won for the APC in the entire senatorial district Atiku comes from.”

When contacted on the aspiration, Namdas neither confirmed nor denied vying for the speaker of the House.

“I am eligible to be speaker but it is too early to make a stand because we are still dealing with the governorship and state House of Assembly elections. We will make our positions known as soon as we are back; when we resume,” the Rep added.

Monguno could not be reached to confirm being in the race. When contacted on the telephone, his line indicated that it had been switched off.

SATURDAY PUNCH had exclusively reported that barely one week after the National Assembly elections were held, several lawmakers, who won, had begun to lobby for leadership positions.

The ruling APC, which has retained its majority status according to the results declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission, is said to have already zoned the presiding and principal offices of the chambers to geopolitical zones.

They have started again. Their winner takes all mentality that will bury Nigeria. SP and DSP from N/E and S/W; speaker and deputy speaker from the same zones. What of North Central, SE and SS? Gradually they have started nudging Buhari towards sectionalism. Too early to be too bad.

Senators from south west should go and sit down. South west cannot produce the Vice President, be the leading contender for the speaker and still be lobbying for deputy senate president.

I’m supporting the north east for senate president and the south south for deputy senate president. The speaker of the house of reps should go to the south west while the north central should get the deputy.

What sort of stuppid arrangement is this?

South West and North East should goan sit down.

*North East is too close to North West to produce President and SP.

*South West do not deserve it because they already have VP and they really fumbled by giving a lot of votes to Atiku/Obi.

The Senate Presidency must go to South South.

They worked hard by giving this government an imaginable number of votes especially in Edo, Delta and Akwa Ibom.

Senate President - South South.
DSP - North East.
Speaker - South West.

With the cunny Saraki out of the way, power must change hands, let the ruling party with majority ensure equity and fairness towards sharing key positions. Never must any opposition member take charge again.

U are wise....

Have told them, for 16yrs, PDP felt untouchable till their impatience and over ambitiousness took the better part of most of the leaders .

They created their own downfall, I see APC doing same thing

It is too late to decamp to the APC and be handed the senate presidency. He had his chances before the election and blew it. Nobody can trust him with such a sensitive post again at this point in time. Not with the nasty experience APC got from Saraki.

A little assignment for you to enable you answer your own question.

List APC senators from NC, SE and SS that were in the Senate presently. The fact is APC will want the leaders to be from her members. Also, they will prefer law makers that are not new in the chambers.

The six top positions in the country(President, VP, SP, DSP, Speaker, DS) must be shared to the 6 geopolitical zones we in Nigeria the way it has always been before APC took over.

The APC cannot now use the excuse of non rep cos it has senators and NA members from each of the 6 regions this time around.

APC still do not apparently know the origin of the disdain some persons have for it.

80% of voters from the region I excluded voted for PDP. In as much as the ruling party owe them good governance and equitable distribution of developmental projects, sensitive national positions cannot be entrusted to them. They will have to live with the consequences of their decisions for the next four years.

I hope Omo Agege gets the DSP, that guy has proven his loyalty to an extent.

SE is the sore loser in this election.

There are returning APC senators from the NC and SS . There are returning HOR members from NC, SS and SE.

Moreover, that returning stuff is just an internal arrangemt of the NA. It is not law
