Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar’s campaign group Turaki Vanguard, at the weekend, in Abuja vowed to do everything to frustrate President Goodluck Jonathan should he decide to contest the 2011 presidential election.

National Coordinator of the group, Hon. Oladimeji Fabiyi, who stated this when he received the Northeast zonal executives of the Turaki Vanguard, added: "We are now very comfortable that President Jonathan being a gentleman will not endanger the peace and unity of our country by respecting not only the principle of zoning as enshrined in the constitution of our great party but will ignore the calls of those that don’t wish him well by not contesting the party primaries knowing the damage such a step will bring on his name, the peace and unity of our dear country."

Fabiyi said it will be "foolhardy and suicidal if he (the President) goes ahead to participate as we know the futility of such an exercise and we will do our best not only to dissuade Mr. President from such a calamitous step in order to save and preserve his integrity as a respected leader of our country but will mobilise all Nigerians to save the nation from an unprepared and unwilling President being lured into power by some selfish leaders who do not know the damage such an act will bring on our dear country."

He said the group would use the same strategy that was used to frustrate the third term ambition of former President Olusegun Obasanjo to save Nigeria once again from a scheme that might endanger its corporate existence should Jonathan run.

Fabiyi assured the Northeast executives that the issue of waiver for Atiku would be resolved this week, saying that should not pose a distraction to the group.

He reiterated the need for active mobilisation of all PDP delegates in various states ahead of the party’s convention to secure Atiku’s candidacy.

He said the Vanguard has been revived for the primary purpose of disseminating what Atiku stands for and represent in terms of ideals, vision, philosophy, commitment to rule of law and entrenchment of democracy as well as join other well-meaning groups to chart a "proper" course for the polity.
