Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev announced his shock resignation today, 29 years after taking office.


“I have taken the decision to refuse the mandate of the presidency,” he said in a speech broadcast on state television. Nazarbayev came to power in oil-rich Kazakhstan when it was still a Soviet republic.

The move comes on the back of growing social discontent and an economy still recovering from an oil price plunge in 2014. The announcement also comes just weeks after the ageing strongman dismissed the country’s government.

Nazarbayev will enjoy significant policy-making powers following his resignation thanks to his constitutional status as “Leader of the Nation”. He also became lifelong head of the country’s security council last year. Nazarbayev, who won a 2015 election with almost 98 percent of the vote, was widely expected to seek another term in 2020.

When PDP was in power, they usually recorded 100% votes for Pdp candidates in elections.

Obasanjo under Pdp won 100% of Bonny in 2003. This is despite the fact that Marshall Harry the ANPP Chairman was from the SS.

That is why they are fighting in Rivers till today. This is the first true election there where no one has the monopoly of violence or state apparatus to manipulate elections.

You are very right. It actually started in 2015 when Ameachi moved to APC and knowing what they used to do, violence ensued. The same violence was reflected in Akwa Ibom with Umana moving to APC in 2015. Yet PDP used the power of incumbency in Akwa Ibom and federal might in Rivers State to write the poll results as they usual did. 2019 is the only time PDP was not that free to write results in SS and SE as was their normal practice hence the lower no of votes recorded in those states.
