All that "for better for worse, in sickness and in health", that people recite as marriage vows is unscriptural! It is a curse!

Hmm I u understand why ministers of the faith movement, the likes of Hagin, Oyedepo and Copeland would thoroughly hate that line because most believe the redemption package doesn't permit Christians to be sick or poor in the first place. But the reality is that many Christians live short of God's desire for their divine health and financial prosperity. And you don't want a situation where marriages collapse because of money or health issues.

Therefore, that line though Unscriptural was a necessary innovation from the medieval church to bring marriage partners into a vow bound by death. To ensure that no one jumps ship when things get low - which in many cases it does. In doing so, the church has removed the option of divorcing your partner for circumstantial reasons and reinforced that it would not be part to relationships inspired by benefits only.

My reservation is when major ministries abandon that line it would further weaken people's commitment to lifelong marital covenants.

The only evil the church has been culpable in is not encouraging victims of marital abuse to separate from their abusive spouses - something the church must work on.

Let the weak say I am strong.
some group of people will not like this but I agree though. For better for worse is redundant because the scripture already tell us not to put asunder what has been joined together.
Saying for better for for worse again is like trying to take an insurance policy backed by the altar and congregation.

I agree with your argument and that of faith preachers.

However that vow na just for mouth

Many say it and still betray, cheat on, dupe and even kill their spouses later.

Very valid point. However those kind of people are those without any moral compass. Vow or no vow one should first marry someone who fears God.

Unfortunately, many who break those vows suffer consequences they can't trace to the vows they made...

Let me say it this way, Marriage is a covenant or agreement. And every agreement has terms and conditions - for the good times and the bad times.
And the conditions of a Christian marriage is no retreat no surrender! And in that moment the minister flashes that reality in your eyes you know what you are getting yourself into.

Read this.

It was invented by the western medevial churches as a necessity to ensure couples stay true to each other during hard times which was very much prevalent those times....

The church took it seriously during the bubonic plague pandemic in the 14th century, when it was common for the spouse to abandon the other partner if he/she becomes infected.....
The black death wiped out over 200 million people in Europe and the belief was that God was using the plague to punish sinners, and if u stay close to an infected person u will share in the punishment and get infected.....
This, so many infected people had no one to care for them....
The church wanted to discourage this and the marriage vow was one of the tool they utilized....

Moreso, the dark ages was a difficult time for the working class in Europe.
If u not from a wealthy or aristocratic family, then providing for your family may be tough.
The Roman Catholic church had to find ways to preserve the family unit which was under threat.

On the other hand I know Oyedepo doesn't believe in divorce but he has a problem with professing anything negative. His wife lived with him inside his beetle car, ate baby food with him during the not so financially bright days of the church. This she did even though she was a first class graduate of OAU who by virtue of her degree could have jumped ship and go look for paid employment. He also stood by her during all her health challenges.

In church circles today one of the ways you can look for Oyedepo's trouble is to say the evident. 'The church account is low', 'Sir you are sick' - those are words he hates and can sack a person for... So I know he is not trying to say ppl should abandon their partners when things are tough but he believes pronouncing the negative is equally wrong.

Our View : Staying in marriage is all about COMMITMENT!
Commitment is a mindset . . . an attitude . . . a way of thinking that will enable you and your spouse to navigate through the still waters and the storms of a marriage for better, for best!

It takes longer than you planned
It costs more than you figured
It is messier than you anticipated
It requires greater determination than you expected
Sometimes the only thing that keeps us going is hope!

Commitment is especially important when we face the inevitable conflicts that come in any marriage (or for that matter any relationship). While many today write into their divorce documents, “Irreconcilable differences,”.
God calls us to a higher kind of LOVE to resolve these differences for better, for best!

GOD IS LOVE!!

It always get to a point where you're big and big enough to believe you can say anything and get away with it.

In a situation where there are several Churches with different belief, I won't be here to tell anyone how to live their life in the belief of my own doctrine.

The formula is simple to Church founders, guide your Church according to your covenant and belief and whatever you say is not a general truth. That's all.

But without vows, it's then ok for spouses to jump ship when the going get tough?
Or is he trying to say a christain would neva confront financial challenges? Or medical challenges?
Does anyone who experiences such makes him less of a christain?
Even the bible said "the righteous shall fall 7 times but shall rise 7 times" or
what about the place where it is written that he would never let us go through trials more than we can bear!
Why do these prosperity preachers keep twisting the word just to massage their ego!
So if a christain goes tru financial challenges he begins to question his relationship with God and if the does something wrong to get the money, then it's OK as long as he is not broke!
Sometimes when ppl say the church today is one of the causes of the rot in Nigeria today
I AGREE!!!

So many practices in religion today are just fetishes of the past clothed in 'holy' garb.

There is a thin line between native doctors and these so called pastors and imams.

Well maybe the words were what were placed wrongly.

Maybe its better to say; "unconditionally' and in all 'circumstances' because even the Bible says there is a time for everything under the sun. The Bible also says we wrestle not against flesh and blood but against principalities and powers...etc. So it is a possibility for life's battles to happen.

So challenges CAN happen. Just be there for each other IF it happens. Don't ABANDON SHIP.

Why is the revered Man of God changing tunes na??

Earlier in his ministry, the message on this part of marital message is, 'His marriage is for better for better, never for worse'. Now the tune seem to be changing.

But why?

STOP PRESS!!!

He has not changed his tune. Always the same. That is one part of his earliest messages I love to listen.
