Omar al-Bashir steps down - Sudanese president Omar al-Bashir has reportedly stepped down after months of protests, government sources reveal.

A military council is expected to replace him.

On Thursday, anti-government protesters marched through the streets of Khartoum chanting anti-Bashir slogans.

Protesters outside the defence ministry chanted:

"It has fallen, we won."

Sudan has been rocked by months of anti-government protests. Bashir would be the second leader in Africa to quit amid nationwide protests this month, following Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika's resignation, reports Bloomberg.

Earlier Thursday there were reports of military vehicles surrounding the presidential palace as well as the TV building.

Sudan state television said on Thursday that the armed forces would make an important announcement soon, amid speculation that a coup attempt could be underway against President Omar Al Bashir following months of protests against his 30-year rule.

Tribalism and religious sentiment will naturally kill any protest. That's the reason people called for GEJ's head for Boko Haram insurgency and are merely a 'little pissed' when hundreds are killed in Zamfara State.

We do not have a sit tight President now, what do we need a useless protest for?

Only Obasanjo could have driven us into this kind of situation

Hmmm... The news reads, he stepped down after protests bu citizens... That's the same way Algerian President stepped down too after protests there...

But in Nigeria, the case is different... We only like complaining on social media. Nigerians are used to suffering and smiling and thats why we swallow whatever the government throws at us easily.. The most we can do is rant on social media for few days and turn everything to jokes...

People are saying they want change of leadership here and Buhari gone, but no bold step is being taken to that effect. Some people sef {especially in North} sold their votes all for a paltry some of 500 Naira while some sold theirs for good items that wouldn't even last them for a week or 2...

We need to work on ourselves in this country if we really want things to change for good

Sudan President Omar al-Bashir was removed by the military, Omar al-Bashir has been Sudan's President since 1989,he was removed by the military. but the protest was started by a Woman- Ala’a Salah. This cannot happen in the current Nigeria, because the ladies prefer to be slay Queens, Youths prefer to be Yahoo Boys and the Govt is ready to open fire in a peaceful protest.

Abdelaziz Bouteflika of Algeria and Omar al-Bashir of Sudan are gone, both were forced to resign by protesting youths. The destiny of any nation lies in the youths, the same cannot be said of Nigeria. The youths of this country have lost it.

The only Two Field Marshals that have been Presidents in Africa;
Idi Amin Dada (RIP)
Omar al-Bashir

Algeria President quit due to protests and country remains stable because the West were not invited to bring their fake Freedom and democracy.
Al Bashir quits due to protests and country remains stable because America was not involved.
Gaddafi murdered by US led NATO due to protests and country remains in a civil war since 2011 with serious fighting happening now in Tripoli between Field MArshall Khalifa Haftar and the UN/EU and US backed puppet Govt.

Africa dont need the west in its internal politics

That is exactly my pain with Nigerian youths.
They don't know what they want. Collectively youth can bring a government down also can make a government but with a collective motive and goal.
You can't just dislike a government because of hate.
Nigerian youth are truly its own backwardness.

People are critical of Buhari over the Zamfara killings too....

Such a huge shame...

Algeria and Sudan are different from Nigeria.

Algeria has had a president who spent 20 years in power...and was always changing the laws to give himself extra terms.

Sudan had Omar Al Bashir, who took power in a coup, transformed himself into a civilian president, and also kept himself in power by continued elongation.

Then throw in the fact that the opposition has been divided.

Nigeria?... Since we had democracy come back in 1999...the only leader who has tried tenure elongation is Obasanjo...and we know that he lost out. Even his own supporters refused to back him.

GEJ...if he had won in 2015, would have retired by now.

Buhari has basically indicated that he is going by 2023.

Nigeria is a mess....but when it comes to democracy, we are better than some other countries.
