A New GIANT OF AFRICA Set To Challenge Nigeria's Continental Dominance

The East African Federation (Swahili: Shirikisho la Afrika Mashariki) is a proposed political union of the six sovereign states of the East African Community – Burundi, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda – as a single federated sovereign state. In September 2018 a committee was formed to begin the process of drafting a regional constitution.

At 952,592 sq mi, the East African Federation would be the largest country in Africa and 10th-largest in the world. With a population of 178,978,883 as of 2018, it would also be the second most populous nation in Africa (after Nigeria) and eighth in the world. Its population would be greater than that of Russia, Japan and Mexico, and roughly half that of the United States.

Swahili would be the lingua franca and the official language would be English. The proposed capital is the Tanzanian city of Arusha, which is close to the Kenyan border. Arusha is the current headquarters of the East African Community.

The union's proposed currency would be the East African shilling, which according to a 2013 published report is slated to become the common currency of five of the six member countries by 2023. The GDP (PPP) estimate would be US$472.238 billion and be the fifth largest in Africa and 43rd largest in the world.

Well to me is not bad if and only if they can live together in peace and harmony culturally, religeously and otherwise and by extension bring great development to that region.

I think it's a fabulous idea. It will make them stronger as one nation, than they are now as individual countries.

I would have said Nigeria should do the same in West Africa, but 'our leaders' will never allow it.

Their cup of tea.
I still want my Biafra and hopefully will get it in my life time.

Not everyone one fancies big country. Lichtenstein, Luxembourg, San Marino, Iceland, Austria, Switzerland,Netherland , are all beautiful small countries whose citizens standards of living is better than those of Russians.

But they are protected by the big countries. The USA is their daddy.

Do you want to be the protector or the protected? That is the question. You choose to be small, you'll be someone's bitch.

I don't mind being protected by any big daddy. So long as Biafra materializes and becomes a successful nation capable of uplifting the living standard of her citizens.
Nigeria as big as it is still under the influence of Britain and USA.

But being smaller means you'll be even MORE helpless and dependent on foreign powers. Being small in Africa hasn't really helped nations like Sierra Leone, Gambia, Liberia. Togo etc. They're basically anonymous on the continent in addition to being economically and militarily vulnerable. If they came together and formed a single country I think they'd do better.

Not having quality human resources, poor leadership and wars caused by multi ethnicity driven issues are what made those small countries economically vulnerable , it was never about their size.

Size matters, especially in resource-rich regions, for the simple reason that the larger the country, the more resources at your disposal. Which means larger economy and GDP etc, meaning greater potential for development and industrialisation.. You are also less susceptible to foreign interference in your affairs. You'll be shocked by how much France is in the affairs of countries like Togo and Benin Republic. They basically take their orders from Paris.

Looks like bros Pazienza has been won over to the Biafran project! shocked

Fact of the matter is; whether within a wider Nigerian framework or us going it alone as an independent nation, all true Ndigbo want is for us not to be joined at the hip with hypocritical diabolical peoples that wish us evil....for us to have the freedom to use our God-given resources as we deem fit....and for us to be able to chart our own course for economic success without having to answer to Abuja!

I say true Ndigbo because there are quite a few on here and out in the real world who claim to be Igbo but feel indifferent towards the travails their people have gone though in Nigeria since the 50s when we first started getting butchered in the north!

Some may confuse our confidence and drive to succeed for being brash, cocky and outspoken. But this notwithstanding, if given the opportunity to soar, Igbos will be an asset to any country that's built on God; merit; respect for life; and fairness! That Nigeria is where it is today, coupled with the claim of marginalisation by Igbos in 'one Nigeria' is more than just a coincidence!

If you are large and lack an element of cohesion, which includes uniformity of language, culture, religion and social values.
You will only be a house of commotion, forever at each others throats, while external vultures capitalize on your inherent lack of unity of purpose to divide and exploit your big for nothing country.

Size only matters when there is uniformity of ideals, language, culture and general life out look amongst constituent, as all these build real unity and patriotism.

Nigeria takes orders from Britain and USA. Once a Nigerian president wins an election, he is off to downing street to receive orders. Don't kid yourself, Nigeria is not free from neocolonial interests .

Nwanne,I have always been Biafran from day one. You can go through my post history here.
I just no longer subscribe to a multi ethnic Biafra anymore. Just purely an Igbo/Igboid Biafra.

Every country as large and diverse as Nigeria goes through decades of disunity and strife before emerging united and strong. What Nigeria is experiencing is not unique. The US fought a brutal civil war, and went through decades of segregation and apartheid before emerging the powerhouse it is today. India and China have even bloodier histories. So this whole thing of expecting Nigeria to emerge from colonialism and in 50 years become an advanced nation is just not realistic. We will go through trials..

There will never be any unity between Ndiigbo and Yorubas or between Ndiigbo and Hausas. Not in this universe.
We are not one people. Never was and will never be. Worst still, Ndiigbo will never forget the civil war.
Telling Ndiigbo to stay in same country with Yorubas and Hausas is like telling Jews to become part of Nazi controlled Germany. Ndiigbo will never willingly accept unity with Yorubas and Hausas unless at gunpoint, as we are currently under.

This might be hard for you to understand because you are not Igbo. But this is how it is for us(majority) Ndiigbo. And you know what, the more time passes, the more the Igbo sense of anger against our continued existence in Nigeria becomes, the anger and resentment will only continue to grow in each Igbo generation until we get even by either getting Biafra or at least any form of revenge at all or appeasement, if we are to remain in Nigeria.

China is made up of 92% ethnic Han Chinese. They have a solid unity centred around the overwhelming Han Chinese population. Yet the Tibetians want a country of their own, but are vastly outnumbered and over powered by the Han. Inter clan wars between native Han kingdoms in the past mean nothing. They will always have shared culture and language to pacify each other and unite.
Nigeria doesn't have this. But Biafra of only Igbo/Igboid groups will have this.

Your logic is flawed
Nigeria is big, but has become everyone's bitch. Figure that out.

Nigeria is a protector of whom now?
That glory age where it played big brother to neighboring countries (via ECOMOG) is long gone. As it is now, Nigeria cannot protect itself anymore.

You call those smaller European countries America's bitch cheesy
Very funny.

Why don't you read up about those countries in same Wikipedia and ask yourself if a middle class family there will be willing to trade places with your so called "rich men" here.

The reason why those East African countries are forming alliances is not so they can challenge Nigeria's dominance. That doesn't factor in anymore. Just Ghana is getting it right, and will have Nigeria grovelling at its feet in another decade of steady development.

A future threat to Nigerian hegemony on the continent, if only we had intelligent leaders, such a union must be neutralized at all cost.

"Continental dominance" ke? Biko what does does Nigeria dominate Africa in?
And no, no such East African Federation will ever arise. It's as dead in the water as Gaddafi and his United States of Africa dream.

So much noise, signifying nothing. Nigeria is projected by PwC to be the world's 3rd most populous country after China and India by 2050, with the 14th largest economy on earth, and with an annual GDP of 3.3 trillion USD. That's a big deal, whether you like it or not.

It will make it a major magnet for international investment. The country's future is very bright. The clampdown on corruption by the Buhari administration is a huge factor in our optimism. The East African Federation will challenge for investor attention, making it a possible economic threat to Nigeria. Then again, the two could form a creative trade partnership that could help them both, a bit like Nigeria and South Africa are doing at the moment.
