THEY ARE AWFUL AND ABSOLUTELY UN-AFRICAN. angry angry angry angry

Bro, there are a lot of 'un-african' things happening in Africa today that many said would never happen. . . some good and some not-so-good. I think that is what is one of the effects of globalization!

Retirement Homes a.k.a Old peoples homes.

In as much as I think the concept is rather un-african, I must say it really isnt a bad idea.

Un-African: I just saw a program on "Discovery Science" titled "Curious tribe" in which some people from Papau New Guinea were taken to England to experience western culture. During their visit, they were taken to an old peoples home, where they had a chance to interact with the residents. One thing the PNG people said that struck me was; "Your kids are supposed to be taking care of you, you did not abandon them when they were young so they have to take care of you when you are old".

The truth be told, as much as I understand that retirement homes in england and the US seem to be working, I dont think "Nigeria" is ready for something like that just yet. Imagine the treatments nurses met out on sick patients in the hospitals and imagine what would happen to old helpless people. Rather than operate the home for the old, we should rather have private nurses come and take care of them in our homes, or better still have an old peoples recreation center where the aged can go and associate with people their ages from time to time.

Dont let your parents vex and swear for you. If they ask for it, allow them go there but if not, let them stay where they can see their grand children.
I also think that the growth of these homes is fuelled by urban squeeze where there are not enough homes to go round. Most parents that built and own houses here will prefare to live in their houses so you can only hire workers for the oldie in his or her house.

Culturally, retirement home is not our thing, in most Nigerian cultures, the elderly retires in the village. I feel is worth giving a chance as long as the caregivers will maintain good ethic and not resort in abusing those under their care and is worth stating that in most African society is considered a taboo

In Nigeria, labor is very cheap, you can hire  load of care givers to take care of your loved ones
without spending a lot, why putting your relatives in a home

Sometimes, old people just want to be in the company of other old people.

When my grand dad lived with us, after a year, he said he was too bored and would die of boredom if we don't let him go to the village where he can interact with other old people. He was eventually obliged and was all the happier for it

I would like to say that it is not about " will it work or not work" having retirement care homes in nigeria.

We are not used to this idea and it would be a lot easier and cheaper to look after our older people in their own homes or places they have lived for long time based on the principles of Family Attachment.

We cannot compare Nigeria to most advanced western countries mentioned who have care homes for their aged ones because it takes them to organise and structure how the care is to be provided in care homes including the trainings and qualifications of staff that works with the older people, and this is something that they continues to monitor on regular basis in order to prevent abuse or delivering care that is not up to standard to residents.

For me, it is a NO, NO, NO.
