1966 Coup: “THE IGBOS NOW VINDICATED AND EXONERATED”

- Olusegun Obasanjo.

"Let the truth be told. The People involved in that so called 1966 “Igbo coup” were:

1. Major Chukwuma Kaduna Nzeogwu (Midwest Region Igbo)

2. Major Adewale Ademoyega (Western Region – Yoruba), author of “Why we struck”

3. Capt. G. Adeleke (Western Region – Yoruba).

4. Maj. Ifeajuna (Midwestern Region – Igbo).

5. Lt. Fola Oyewole (Western Region – Yoruba), author of “The reluctant rebel”.

6. *Lt. Robert (Bob) Egbiko* (Midwestern Region – Ishan).

7. Lt. Tijani Katsina (Northern Region – Hausa/Fulani).

8. Lt. O. Olafemiyan (Western Region – Yoruba).

9. Capt. Gibson Jalo (Northern Region – Bachama).

10. Capt. Swanton (Northern Region – Middle Belt).

11. Lt. Hope Harris Eghagha (Midwest – Urhobo).

12. Lt. Dag Warribor (Midwest – Ijaw)

13. 2nd Lt. Saleh Dambo (Northern Nigeria -Hausa)

14. 2nd Lt. John Atom Kpera (Northern Nigeria-Tiv).

The reason for calling the 1966 Coup an Igbo exercise is because the government of Nigeria has refused teaching Nigerian History in our schools. And core North has been busy misinforming Nigerians that the 1966 coup was an Igbo coup.

……………………………………….

Yoruba – Igbo fact sheet.

This article has no tribal sentiments. Please add your own facts if you have any. History will always tell us what happened.

1. Azikiwe defeated Awolowo to become the first Nigerian Premier of Western Nigeria (present Southwest plus Edo and Delta States). Awolowo instead of forming Opposition, rather formed Egbe Omo Yoruba and used it to intimidate Yorubas that won election on NCNC platform to cross carpet and join him against Azikiwe. This was the first parliamentary coup in Nigeria.

2. Awolowo from then on, started indoctrination of Yorubas against the “threat of Igbo domination”. That is how the incurable seed of fear of Igbos was sown in the psychic of Yorubas which Yorubas later sold to other groups through Yoruba control of the media for decades.

3. Alhaji Tafawa Balewa , Nigeria ‘s first Prime minister could not tolerate Awolowo’s treacherous and inordinate ambition of acquiring political power by all means and at any cost. So, he threw Awolowo into prison for treason.

4. Samuel Ladoke Akintola who replaced Awolowo as Premier of Western Nigeria tried to destroy Awolowo’s political grip on Yorubaland by forming a party to takeover Western Nigeria in alliance with the Hausa-Fulani oligarch who Awolowo despised as a backward race. Consequently, Yorubaland went ablaze in revolt against Akintola’s plot. Law and order completely broke down in Western Nigeria. Wole Soyinka wore a mask and forced announcers at Western Nigeria Broadcasting Corporation to declare that Akintola’s government was a fraud.

5. Yet, Tafawa Balewa refused to declare state of emergency in Western Nigeria in order to keep Akintola as a proxy for Hausa-Fulani interest. This was the MAIN reason Yoruba graduates in the Army were the brains behind the coup led by Chukwuma Nzeogwu who happened to be Igbo.

6. As Wole Soyinka and even Obasanjo acknowledged, Nzeogwu ‘s coup was widely accepted by a vast majority of Nigerians across regional, religious and ethnic divides. But the dissatisfied Hausa-Fulani oligarchy who had majority in Nigerian Army infantry used their puppets, Yakubu Gowon, Theophilus Danjuma and co to overthrow General Ironsi.

7. In order to win support of Yorubas, Gowon released Awolowo from prison. The Hausa-Fulani knew Awolowo’s fear of Igbo as the only group that stood against his ambition to power. Gowon therefore quickly made a deal with Awolowo which in effect was that power would rotate between the North and the West (Hausa-Fulani and Yoruba) in post war Nigeria if Awolowo convinced Yorubas to join the North in fighting Igbos.

8. The Nigerian Army was consequently split into two divisions: the northern sector division commanded by Hausa-Fulani and the southern sector division, commanded by Yorubas.

9. Lagos, a city built largely by Igbos and were Igbos invested heavily, was also ceded to Yorubas as a State even when there was no Abuja at the time (1967).

10. Awolowo was made Vice Chairman of Federal Executive Council and Finance Minister. All federal government owned banks in Nigeria at the time which included the Central Bank and First Bank, were under Awolowo and Yoruba management. It was a deal Awolowo could not resist. The man was an unscrupulous Machivellian anyway.

11. The Igbos were eventually defeated and Yorubas became champions of nationalism.

12. Awolowo tried to make sure no Igbo man or woman would ever be more than financial destitute let alone have the financial resources to rival a Yoruba

13. To achieve his objective of permanent Yoruba supremacy, Awolowo insisted that every bank account owned by an Igbo, regardless of how much was in it before the declaration of Biafra, would only be replaced with twenty pounds! He instructed Yoruba Permanent Secretaries who took over the Federal Civil service when Igbos left, to make sure that Igbo senior civil servants were not reinstated but to rather retire those who could not be dismissed as rebels. The same policy obtained in the Armed Forces of Nigeria and Police .

14. The Igbo were not only made pariahs but also financial destitutes.

15. Every house and industry in Igbo city was destroyed by war. Schools were closed for 3 years and many were razed to the ground.

16. Awolowo masterminded the indiginization policy by which Yorubas bought over all companies in Nigeria using money readily made available to them by the banks under their control. The Igbos were excluded.

17. They rejoiced and relaxed and complaisantly asked: “How could Igbos ever rear their ugly heads up again”? Sure, if that had happened to Yorubas or any other ethnic group, that would be their end. But as Awolowo rightly feared, we happen to be Ndi Igbo.

18. The shooting war ended 45 years ago and we are still here. We have survived all policy shenanigans contrapted by treacherous Yoruba masterminds and executed by their Hausa-Fulani allies.

19. In frustration, they have realized that we are who we are. Imagine their frustration! Never mind all Yoruba masterminded psychological attacks on Igbos disparaging us in any way they can.

20. Yes, Federal government policy has made them the tycoons of oil and gas, telecommunications, insurance and manufacturing. Oh, their Hausa-Fulani cum military allies gave Nigeria to Obasanjo for 8 years in keeping faith with their alliance.

21. Bola Tinubu is struggling for Awolowo mantle by forming an alliance of etho- religious jingoistic to ensure power keeps rotating between Yoruba and Hausa-Fulani. Where is the position of the Igbo and other tribes in Nigeria.

THAT IS WHY IGBOS WHO EXPERIENCE ALL THE ABOVE INJUSTICES THINK THAT BIAFRA IS THE ULTIMATE ANSWER.

HOWEVER, MY TAKE IS THAT THIS SHOULD MAKE OUR IGBO LEADERS FOCUSED, AND FIGHT FOR THE COMMON GOOD OF THEIR KINSMEN, NOT ONLY FOR THEIR OWN POCKETS.

Obasanjo is a great man. After combining with many great soldiers to use over three million Igbos for pepper soup and suya and using millions of the women and ladies as sex slaves, he now thinks that Igbos are right after all. Can you all see signs of hallucination and mental imbalance in him?

Yorubas are always prepared, let Igbos start another war and see the 1967 to 1970 Xmas party being replayed, this time, more brutal. You go to war to kill, steal and destroy. You don't go to war and start shouting genocide, that is the whole essence of war, to wipe out the enemy.

Of course being the medieval-minded thug you are you think there’d be a replay of the 67-70 uncivil war when you got away with rape, starvation as an instrument of war and targeting civilian non-combatants!

Tanko Yakassai People said it was a quarrel between the wife of the AG leader, Chief Awolowo and the wife of the man who succeeded him, his deputy, Chief Akintola and the reason for the fight was that when Awolowo was the Premier, the allegation was that his wife was getting contracts for the supply of exercise books and reading materials in primary and secondary schools and that when he left power and was succeeded by his deputy, the wife of the deputy insisted that the contract should be shared between her and Mrs Awolowo. That led to a quarrel between the two wives and eventually it became a quarrel between two giants which led to the break-up of the party, but the public view of the crisis was that Akintola was of the opinion that the only way for the Yorubas to be in the mainstream of Nigerian politics was to cooperate with the northern leaders. Awolowo was opposed to that and the crisis led to the split of the party at their convention in Jos, I think in 1962 or thereabout. That was what led to the crisis and also that was the excuse given by the military to take over power. In essence, could that be the beginning of our setback in our quest for true democracy? In our march towards perfecting democratic rule, the military intervention was the main cause of our setback. The first one of 1966 and the second one of 1983 when Buhari overthrew Shagari. We have had 16 straight years of civilian rule. Do you foresee any possible military incursion in the nearest future? Well, I am not God; only God can tell what would happen in the future but, at times the disenchantment and dissatisfaction within the society at large, could affect the psyche of the different segments of the society, the military also included. For instance, there is widespread poverty and lack money in circulation in the country now. People, hardly are able to have enough to take care of themselves and their dependents. The military took over in 1966 believing that they could stop the killings in some parts of the West, but in the end they created a condition for the civil war. When the price of oil came down from $45 to about $7 per barrel in 1982/83, Buhari and his group thought that if they took over power, they would be able to handle the situation. This was exactly why they overthrew Shagari. Buhari’s broadcast I read Buhari’s broadcast and he talked of corruption but there was no corruption because I just went through the list of members of Shagari’s cabinet, aides, ministers, advisers, assistants and others, and I think we were 75 or so. Throughout the two-year period of the military tribunal, only five people were indicted. Most of those convicted were state government officials but people at the centre, the majority of them, were not indicted and so we cannot describe that regime as corrupt. The corruption that we are now talking about was exacerbated by the military from 1983 to date. Even the misfortune we had was that when this country was going back to civilian rule, power was handed over by the military to a retired military officer and therefore he ran the system with a military psyche. Now, he handpicked Yar’Adua and after he died, he (Obasanjo) manoeuvred to get Jonathan to take over with the hope that he would continue to dictate from the background. He amended the constitution of his party to make himself the life-chairman of the Board of Trustees BOT. This was after he had sold everything saleable to his kitchen cabinet boys and when Yar’Adua came, he realized that life could not continue that way and he decided to reverse the sales of many of those properties and other policies. When Jonathan succeeded Yar’Adua, Obasanjo also hoped that he would stay in his Ota Farm to be dictating things to Jonathan because dictatorship is part of the military psyche and they live by directing their subordinates.

Igbos aren't calling for war with anybody, all they are asking for is freedom; peaceful division of Nigeria so all regions that feel cheated and wish to be on their own can peacefully go their way and live in peace.

Stop calling for war because if another war happens, it won't be like that of 1966 that was fought mostly on Igbo region while other regions enjoyed peace.

If another war happens, be assured that bombs and missiles will be landing in all states and regions of Nigeria.

Take a look at Syria, Yemen, Iraq, Libya, as small as the rebels are, they have held the main government forces on a deadly civil war for over 6 years now still no peace, all major cities bombed!

Stop comparing 1966 to 2019.

Ordinary Boko Haram ragtag militants a whole Nigerian army + Cameroon + Chad + Niger can't defeat, so think about another full blown civil war, it won't be a walk over for any region.

Igbos want peaceful division of Nigeria without war so Yorubas and Hausa-Fulanis that hate Igbo so much can have their peace and time to share their love in peace without disturbances from stubborn Igbos, is that too much to ask for pls

It must come!!

On January 16th, 1966, Igbo brought calamity to this nation and derailed the country. Till date we have never been able to reverse the destruction and ruin caused by the hands of Ibos when they ravaged the country and killed leaders of Yoruba, Itshekiri, Hausa and Kanuri in politics and military but saved their own leaders from bullets. This is the truth of our history!

Which Igbos?

Someone from Edo state is he Igbo?

Someone from kogi is he Igbo?

Why are yorubas liars?

They know the truth but kept conspiring against the Igbos.

Igbos aren't calling for war with anybody, all they are asking for is freedom; peaceful division of Nigeria so all regions that feel cheated and wish to be on their own can peacefully go their way and live in peace.

Stop calling for war because if another war happens, it won't be like that of 1966 that was fought mostly on Igbo region while other regions enjoy peace.

Ordinary Boko Haram ragtag militants a whole Nigerian arm + Cameroon + Chad + Niger can't defeat, so think about another full blown civil war, it won't be a walk over for any region.

Igbos want peaceful division of Nigeria without war so Yorubas and Hausa-Fulanis that hate Igbo so much can have their peace and time to share their love in peace without disturbances from stubborn Igbos, is that too much to ask for pls

It must come!!
Igbos started the "One Nigeria is a must" mantra.
Azikwe ensured that secession clause was not included in the constitution.

Aguiyi Ironsi declared war on Niger Delta people when they seceded. Ojuwku was the one that led soldiers to capture Isaack Adaka Boro for wanting out of Nigeria.

Igbos through Ben Nwabueze and Aguiyi Ironsi changed Nigeria from Federal state to Unitary nation.
