The federal government awarded 121 road contracts and had 1, 262 kilometres (km) of road constructed from 2016 through 2018, LEADERSHIP has learnt.

This was contained in the statistics given by the Ministry of Power, Works and Housing when the immediate past Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola was presenting the score card of his stewardship as Minister under the Buhari administration regarding road construction, rehabilitation, and maintenance recently.

According to statistics, in November 2015, the ministry inherited about 206 road projects across the country, most of which were abandoned by the contractors mainly for lack of fund, and in a few cases, insecurity, with the attendant loss of jobs by thousands who were engaged and earning their living from those contracts.



In the course of the briefing, the ministry gave statistics of road projects for the three years. It said in 2016, 277 kilometres of road was constructed, 345km was rehabilitated and 17,749 people were employed in the process.

For 2017, the federal government constructed 488km of roads, rehabilitated 256km and engaged 31,227 persons. For 2018 till November, 497km of road had been constructed, while 284km was rehabilitated and 30,402 persons employed.



The Permanent Secretary (Works and Housing), Mr Mohammed Bukar said there had been award of 365 roads for construction since 2001 of which the Buhari government awarded 121 in three years while previous governments awarded 144 others in the whole of 17 years of the current democratic experience in Nigeria.

“You will see that out of the 365 roads, 144 were awarded in the period of 17 years while in just three years, we awarded 121 roads, and are still counting because the 2018 procurement is still on-going,” Bukar noted.

It therefore means that the work sector, awarded 121 road contracts, constructed 1,262km, rehabilitated 885km, and employed 79, 378 persons within the 3 years of 2016, 2017, and 2018.

I must say this....no matter what...Jonathan fvck up. And that was why people like me voted against him. Gej had enough money to work with....yet 4 to 5 yrs after he became president there was few completed roads without any real improvement in other spheres of life. Insecurity, epileptic power and poor national infrastructure were rife under gej's govt which had the best economy ever in nigeria- $540 billion GDP with oil per barrel at average of $70 and even goin above $100. All we had was senators and ministers flaunting wealth b4 us outrageously....it was a shame...a better president would have left a good legacy on infrastructute...not just the legacy of conceding defeat.

However with the open war declared on Igbos by APC...they too can burn in hell....i wish obj or yaradua could return as president...especially yaradua...its not enough to build roads... its also important to not be a divisive leader...treat all parts as ur constituency regardless of politics. Northeast never voted pdp and even started bokoharam and was full of ANPP Govs yet pdp accomodated them....shame on apc

Out of very few, I respect your candidness with facts! However, between you and I we know this is Nigeria where you never can tell a person's character until he attains political or social elites class by whatever means.
What I'm saying is let this administration make all appointments from my neighborhood if they so desire, as long as I'm not directly benefiting, fvk 'em...
Thus it shouldn't descourage those who keep speaking against the regime with positive intent from continuing their good work...

Like Ibadan to Lagos, lbadan to Akure, Akure to Abuja and others which are typically eyesore, death traps,disgraceful , embarrassing and shameful federal roads. May be the roads were only done only in the north. Smh

When a generation sees road construction and rehabilitation as an achievement of the government they voted and pays tax to, then know that there's no future for them. How can a sensible person be bragging about road construction in this age and time? Indeed Nigeria is still in the stone age. Others are advancing technologically, we are still here mixing sand and cement. Obviously, this generation is hopeless.

Which parts of the country were the roads constructed? Or constructed on papers?
