The President of Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Paul Usoro, has declared that judges are afraid of performing their duties as expected due to fear and intimidation from the executive arm of government.

Usoro lamented over the “intimidation of judges by members of the executive arm and security operatives”, stressing that judges now “operate under an oppressive and pervasive climate of fear and insecurity.”

He made the disclosure while speaking at NBA’s National Executive Committee, NEC, meeting, held at the association’s secretariat in Abuja.

The Senior Advocate of Nigeria said: “Our Judges are threatened, intimidated and blackmailed mostly by the executive arms of government and their agencies both at the federal and state levels.

“Our judges cannot deliver justice under a climate of fear and intimidation. Justice thrives where and when there is an independent judiciary. There can be no such independence when there is no security of tenure for our Judges. There can be no independence of the judiciary when our judges are intimidated, threatened and blackmailed by state agencies and their officials.

“There can be no independence of the judiciary when our judges are actively coerced by state officials to think and reason only in the manner that those officials and, presumably, government want them to think.

“My dear colleagues, as you would observe, I have given you three illustrative instances of the insecurity that pervades our land from the three NBA Nigerian Zones – East, West and North – and that, by itself, makes the point that no part of our country is safe.

“No region is safe, and no tribe is safe. No one indeed is safe. And yet, we have governments in place, at the federal, state and local government levels and the primary business of governments is the protection of lives and property. Indeed, without security of lives and property, everything else grinds to a halt.”

They feel threatened and intimidated because they are not clean. If you're not corrupt you have nothing to be afraid of.

I disagree with the NBA president. Why won't he talk like this when he is being prosecuted for collecting bribes from akwa-ibom state government for onward transmission to corrupt judges? Buhari has made judges afraid of accepting bribes as was the norm when Jonathan ran a free-for-all open treasury government.

This Usoro too is talking.

When the body of SANs condemned the trial of Onnoghen, this crook tried to get them to condemn his own trial too but they refused. I mean his colleagues refused to condemn his trial.

He tried to get NBA to condemn his trial but majority of lawyers refused and he had to back down when he saw that the majority were not in his support.

He's alone in the nonsense he's talking online. The NBA has a Publicity secretary. Why didn't the Publicity secretary release it as a communique arising from the NEC meeting?

Guys, Usoro is on his own and the NBA isn't supporting him. Let him go and vomit the yams he ate and stop bleating about.

Paul Usoro the NBA President is an accused person and is currently on bail in a money laundering case. He was arrested for money laundering for Gov. Udom.

This man has a corruption case on his head yet he is fit according to Nigerian lawyers to lead them. Where is the moral compass of NBA members?

Just read the comments above then you can authoritatively deduce that Nairaland is now a branch of APC!

The romance between the judiciary and the federal government is really making these miscreants/zombies have a hard on! What a way to masturbate!

He was nearly removed when he was being prosecuted but some idiotic lawyers in the minority opposed his removal. Now, every branch of the legal profession Usoro turns to denies him support.

Even the conference planning Committee chair who had been planning NBA conferences before turned down Usoro's offer to plan conference this year.

Body of SANs refused discussing his request for open support when they sat over Onnoghen's matter.

Never seen an NBA President so uselessed by his own members.

Even lawyers aren't in support of Paul Usoro. He rigged the last election through Chams Plc who used Russian emails like Yandex dot com to register fake emails in the names of real NBA members so that they can vote.

Cry all you want, Usoro got Udom's associates jumping bail and running off hence being declared wanted. Usoro couldn't run cos he's a big fish. If they were honest, they would have waited and cleared themselves.

Paul Usoro is the most disgraceful NBA President in the history of the Nigerian bar. Even JB Daudu who was blasted by the Supreme Court wasn't this useless.
