Just great, another contractual dispute to follow on the heels of the outrageously inflated MTN fine, the byzantine FX rate scheme, the arbitrary impositions of import controls, and the refusal to make even the slightest move in the direction of privatizing or deregulating anything whatsoever. It’s as if the Buhari government feels even the current depressed levels of FDI are still too high for its comfort, and is therefore casting about for new ways to drive it towards the goal of zero! Of course, there will be no shortage of poorly educated, blind partisans who will show up to cheer on this new inanity ...

indeed

Nigeria is populated by complete idiots

The problem is that this Buhari government is populated by small minded hawks with a parochial mindset out to only achieve very self-centred short term objectives for themselves. We have never had this kind of gruesome government. And the truth is that if the Supreme Court doesn't do the needful soonest, Nigeria would bleed to death within the next four years.

It's a shame

Can we as Nigerians be rational for once!!! Great move by the Federal government I hope they cancel it permanently how can you have 3 seaports in one state when there are other States like Cross River, Delta, Anambra and Rivers State that needs more improvements on their ports we are complaining of a papa gridlock and here we are trying to build new seaports in the same Lagos that is too congested how about moving to other parts of Nigeria must everything be centred in Lagos.. this is the injustice people are crying and talking about...

Your argument sounds very irrational, they already have many seaports in the same region you listed and businesses in that region are still not utilizing the ports so where is the sense and wisdom in building more ports and wasting money in that region?

Need and market forces decides where to site port, not personal feelings and tribal sentiments.

You can not dictate to private investors and their billions where and how to invest their money, they've don their homework, feasibility sturdies, market and profit analysis before sending down their money to invest and build.

So, you don't want a seaport in Badagry, but Ports in Ghana and Benin are already taking away business from us and the same APM terminals they just turned away in Badagry is building a new deep sea port in Ghana just a few miles down the road to compete with us in Nigeria

We should be dominating seaport business activities all over the West coast of Africa, but because of petty tribalism and shortsighted government policies, we are handing over our port money and businesses to neighboring countries.

Governments or public sentiments like yours can not and shouldn't be determining where and how private entities invest their money, turn them away and watch them go elsewhere to build and compete and take away business from you.

The Badagry port is not a Federal government initiative but those of the private sector. It is a public-private sector driven project involving the federal government 20%, Lagos state government 20% and the Private investors with 60% stakes. The private investors have done their business case and chosen Badagry as best to locate this particular Port. Other areas are also open for development in the south but the investors will defintely consider their viability first.

Impact Analysis that Hadiza is giving as excuse to cancel the Badagry project through using the Federal Executive Council should actually be under the purview of the state where the project is located (irrespective of the Acts and Clauses establishing ports etal).

For developmental sake, allowances/legislation should be given for private development of airports/strips and seaports without government overbearing control as is this current situation. It is Lagosians that are affected by the impact of Apapa Wharf & Tincan ports, so the responsibility of site-ing/ impact analysis should be a Lagos concern.

The Lagos Ibadan express way is still under construction after so many years simply because Abuja is overseeing beyond where her eyes can carry her. This is the same bureaucratic bottleneck they are trying to introduce to the Badagry port project. It will never get completed this way.

Lagos state should fight this out as it is a developmental project to open up the already over stretched population housing a Country (Lagos is Nigeria) and with very low employment rates. It is everyday that people keep flocking into the state, where will the jobs come from if developments like this are cancelled or put on hold because of politics.

The federal government should encourage, support and give untainted backing to the realization of the Badagry Seaport project. She should ensure project delivery dates, specifications and all that were provided for in the project charter are met to make us all as Nigerians who are part of the stakeholders happy.

Well, it’s a PRIVATE sector-led port (promoted by an AP Moeller-led consortium)...
So canceling it does not necessarily means it will be relocated elsewhere in Nigeria (instead they might even move it to Benin Republic).

Holiatic value?
How about the fact that Nigeria is concentrating its economy in the tiniest state that cannot expand beyond a certain point?

How about the fact that other access to the atlantic is being under utiilized?

What is wrong with spreading devt? Is that not the function of govt and nationhood?
You think it is prudent concentrating devt in lagos?

Because ports drives devt. Amy region that wants industries must have a port, and it is criminal even, to have the natural opportunity and not utilize it.

Lagos is at its equilibrium. Any other major FG investment is just detrimental.

Any serious govt must begin to look elsewhere to create an economic center for the good of everybody.
And the south south fits the bill. Access to the sea and abundant energy sources.

Bros,

Slow down. I am not against other regions have ports, but other fundamentals are at play. For example contrast this Warri has ports, but with the current security situation, virtually no importer (even an a Warri indegene importer) wants to go there. We need to solve that. Ibom is a huge prospects and receiving attention both from Govt and private investors.

My point is you do not step down one of your strategic prospects (Badagry) that has received investors interest (Gas Hub [WAGPI, Oil & Gas Fabrication Hub [LADOL, SIFAZ, JAPAUL & NLNG - AFC backed consortium], regional commercial/industrial cluster [Agbara] and integration with other clusters). A substantial part of the financial investment is almost guaranteed off-shore. It could be relatively more cost/value effective when you do the numbers and projections. Consider this, why do you think LADOL insisted on Badagry as against Bayelsa for FTZ?

We can do "national interest" and spread these project with judgement based on national sentiments......but it may not be sustainable. I say if a region gets the fundamentals (security, accessibility, connectivity, investments, right environments etc) right, by all means it will be self-sustainable.

This widespread assumption that ports are supposed to be allocated by government is as absurd as the reasoning which brought about the location of a refinery in Kaduna, far away from the natural location any private investor would have chosen. This is not the sort of thing to be squandering precious government funds on, even as clean water, basic healthcare, primary education and so many other vital things are being neglected.

Let me shape this narrative. Do you know that the cost of Pipeline from gathering area to Kaduna Refinery is almost the cost of building the refinery itself. When you now contrast that with what value (waste) has Kaduna Refinery given us over the years, you will understand why investors will not consider us serious when we come up with sentiments like these
