Statement By Saraki Campaign Organisation On The Installation Of Cctv In Abuja by kolayusuf: 9:45am On Oct 09, 2010
The Saraki Campaign Organization is pleased to see that the Federal Government has announced it will install Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) in strategic locations of Nigeria’s Capital City. CCTV will play a vital role in detecting and capturing criminals and terrorists in the future.

Sadly, the Federal Government is late to adopt this security innovation. Other major world capitals have had it for years. Nigeria should be a world leader, not a laggard.

The recent decision by the Federal Capital Territory to install Close Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras in strategic location of Nigeria’s capital city, Abuja, to combat crime has further confirmed the visionary leadership of the Kwara State Governor, Dr Abubakar Bukola Saraki who has for the last year provided this technology in order to ensure security of lives and property in the State.

This vision, the first of its kind in the country was commissioned by the State Governor in July 2009. In the first phase of the project, 12 CCTV cameras were installed in commercial areas of the State Capital.
The former Inspector General of Policy (IGP), Mr. Mike Okiro was present at the commissioning ceremony. At this occasion he urged other state Governors and other stakeholders in the country to emulate the visionary leadership of Governor Bukola Saraki as demonstrated by the provision of the CCTV cameras installed in strategic locations of the state capital.

The IGP further stated “The Kwara State government is one of the first States of the federation under the leadership of Governor Bukola Saraki that has once again demonstrated that they are in tuned with the current global reality that crime prevention is today everybody’s goal”.

He also said, “the development in the state now is evident that the legitimacy and authority of the state over the people can be sustained only to the extent it can guarantee the security of life and property of the citizens”.

The installed video surveillance camera system has been providing a significant function in the state, because the system fights and prevents crimes. It has helped to deter crime and helped the governed to feel much safer; it also provides the police with leads or evidence as well as assisting traffic control to ensure free flow of traffic within the metropolis.

Due to the effectiveness and efficiency of the installed cameras in the metropolis, the state government has, for the second phase of the project, erected a CCTV command centre as a donation to Police Command. This is 70% complete and is to be commissioned in December 2010. It will accommodate 69 Camera Locations, covering all entry and exit points to the state capital as well as all commercial and residential areas.

To ensure the effective and efficient utilization of the new technology, the operators are currently under-going local training preparatory for the overseas training required for them them to understand modern CCTV operational techniques and procedures.

This singular effort of Governor Bukola Saraki in Kwara State has singled out the state as an environment conducive for development and an investor friendly state. It is a testament to a leader who is committed to the well-being of his people and development of the State, through provision of adequate security of lives and property.
This is another example of where Governor Saraki did not wait for the Federal Government before doing what is necessary for his people

The Federal Government, though adopting the security innovation lately, should expedite action in the provision of modern CCTV security technology in all the major cities in Nigeria as a matter of urgency.

It's true the CCTV cameras were installed but Kwarans are yet to see its use especially with the unresolved murder of the proprietor of "B System" Supermarket located between Min of Works roundabout and Challenge junction where the cameras has been installed. Or is it a case of abradabra or "esin inu iwe"
