The Genealogy records in Matthew and Luke have their characteristic wordings. In Matthew, it is said that "Jacob BEGAT Joseph" (a direct siring); but in Luke 3:23, it is rather that Joseph was "the was the son of Heli" (Jewish reckoning according to marital connections). The difference is that Luke does not claim that Heli directly sired Joseph.
