Donald Trump has tried to distance himself from the "send her back" chants aimed at Somali-born congresswoman Ilhan Omar during an election rally.
The president has been engaged in an escalating battle of words with Ms Omar and three of her Democrat colleagues in latest days, having kicked off the racism row when he advised them they must "go returned and assist restoration the totally broken and crime-infested locations from which they came".
He dedicated 20 minutes of a prolonged speech in North Carolina on Wednesday night to criticising crew recognized as "The Squad", which subsequently led to his frenzied target audience chanting "send her back" in reference to Ms Omar.
