Google recently announced a new image format for the web, WebP, an alternative to the JPG image format touted to be faster according to early reviewers. WebP is an improvement on the compression that JPEG provides, based on the open-sourced VP8 codec, applied through the intra frame coding to push the envelope in still image coding. WebP is an emerging image format put out by Google. It's designed to use a more aggressive and better optimized compression algorithm than JPG and PNG with the objective of reducing file sizes with minimal quality loss.
