Ondo: Gunmen kidnap commissioner's mother, sister
From James Sowole in Akure , 10.19.2010

The Ondo State Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Mr Tola Wewe became the third member of Governor Olusegun Mimiko's cabinet whose relations became victims of kidnapping in Ondo State as his mother, Mrs Pege Esther Wewe and a 12  year old relation, Racheal Lawrence were at the weekend abducted by gunmen.

A source said the 81  year old woman and the girl were abducted last Friday, October 15, 2010 by gunmen, who invaded the country home of the commissioner at Sabomi in Ese-Odo Local Government Area of the state.

Before this latest saga, kidnappers had at different times abducted the wife of the Commissioner for Lands and Housing, Alhaji Sikiru Basaru and the daughter of the former Commissioner for Works, Pastor Yele Omogunwa.

The abductors of Wewe's mother were said to be demanding for a ransom of N20m before they can release the captives.

Reacting to the incident, the Ondo State Commissioner for Information, Mr Ranti Akerele described the incident as barbaric

"It is the height of inhuman action and depth of human wickedness to have kidnapped an 81-year old woman from the comfort of her home.

The State government condemned the action with all the vehemence at its disposal and we are leaving no stone unturned to secure the release of the woman who incidentally is the mother of a high ranking state official", he said.

Akerele said the moment the government learnt about it, it began to take necessary steps "but until the woman is eventually released we cannot judge our intervention as fruitful yet".

"We are working in conjunction with security agencies in order not to jeopardise the safety of the captives.

I want to say however that Ondo State is not an haven of criminality although we are a Niger Delta state, such things would not be allowed to thrive here.

We want to tell the miscreants behind this occurrence that such enterprise will not find any place here as government is ready to protect all law-abiding citizens and put the weight of the law on offenders", he said.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police for the Ondo State Command, Mr, Ballah Magaji Nasarawa said the command was making a concerted efforts at ensuring the arrest of the criminals and release of captives and whoever is connected with the unwholesome act would face the wrath of law.

The commissioner in a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, Aremu Adeniran said the command is on top of the situation assuring members of the public of safety of their lives and property.

The police urged members of the public to give useful information on how to checkmate the menace of criminals in their areas in the spirit of community policing.
