Lagos – Residents of Borno State have raised the alarm over unrelenting attacks by the Boko Haram insurgents who, they claim, are inching their way into Maiduguri, the state capital.

Zanna Hassan Boguma, a traditional ruler, who disclosed this on Monday in an open letter to President Muhammadu Buhari, insisted that “the insurgents have virtually surrounded Borno, not far away from the state capital, to which nothing has been done”.

Writing on behalf of residents and indigenes of the state, he stressed that the development belied the claim in official quarters that Boko Haram had been technically defeated.

“Your Excellency is not being told the truth about the situation in the theatre of war. You are either fed with false information, or raising hopes of technical defeat of the Boko Haram, which is far from the truth,” he said.

The dismal situation has specifically seen the incessant and daredevil attacks by the insurgents on many communities in the state, including Nganzai, Gajiganna, Gubio, Magumeri, Amurwa, Kalali Abdul, Wanori, and yesterday, Dalori villages.

For three days in a row, the Boko Haram terrorists viciously descended on two local government areas of the state and five other villages without a response from the Nigerian military, Boguma further disclosed.

According to Boguma, the situation “is becoming a source of great concern to citizens living in the two local government areas and five villages simultaneously attacked for three days without any counter-measures or even a response to distress calls from the locals”.

He further lamented that despite the numerous military formations in the state, some of the insurgents who were hibernating around the Alau general area and in the Gubio and Magumeri LGAs had a field day without any response from the military.

Rather, the men of the Nigerian army in the area would “take to their heels leaving all hardware to be carted away by the insurgents”, he said.

Boguma said the recent systematic attacks on Gubio, a strategic battalion, which made the troops to take flight “is not only a shame but a slap in the face of our armed forces”.

He maintained that this “smacks of mockery and abuse on the strength and professionalism of our armed forces which was once a formidable force in Africa”.

He, therefore, called on the president to act decisively to stamp out the carnage being visited on Borno communities by the rampaging terrorists, saying they voted him into office confident that he would be their answer for Boko Haram.

“We, in Borno and the North, had high hopes when we elected this government, we saw in you hope of redemption from our national calamities, knowing very well your patriotism and integrity,” he reminded President Buhari.

He added: “But with the recent upsurge in insurgents’ activity in Northern Borno and the actions of the military, we are left with no other options than to despair.”

He particularly lambasted the military for letting the people of Borno down, saying the way and manner the Chadian and Cameroonian forces were able to tackle the insurgents so gallantly and to a standstill had exposed the men of the Nigerian army at the frontlines for cowardice.

“Cameroonian and Nigerien armed forces seem to be more professional and determined in the operation. Their courageous pursuit of the enemies in the Lake Chad has exposed our soldiers as cowards and unserious which has reduced their image of once the most fearsome and professional army,” he said.

He expressed regrets that the tendency for cowardice among the troops has also seen numerous cases of desertion and abandonment.

“Cases of desertion and abandonment of formations need to be thoroughly investigated,” he suggested as a course of action.

Curiously, too, the men are sometimes dissuaded by their superiors from confronting the terrorists, he noted.

“Sometimes, those officers that have the zeal and passion for the profession were demoralised by their commanders and in most cases prevented from either pursuing the enemies or even in responding to intelligence information about the movements of the insurgents,” he observed.

He remarked that despite Buhari government’s involvement of people from the North East, where the activities of the insurgents are pronounced, the strategy was yet to translate into reprieve for residents of the area.

According to him, “The Chiefs of Army and Air Force were both from the North East, the National Security Adviser, the Chief of Staff to the President, and the SGF all were from the region, yet they remained mute and inactive.

“In terms of representation in government, you gave us all that it takes to make our region great, but those entrusted have not only failed us but have also failed you in actualising your objective of building a secured and prosperous nation.

“Your Excellency, may kindly wish to recall your exploits as an army commander. We living in Borno will never forget your patriotism and sense of duty by commandeering the reclaiming of our territories from Chad in the 80s against all odds. But from the happenings in Borno and elsewhere, the field commanders and their men in most cases have turned the theatre of war into a milking cow. Many have abdicated their responsibility as defenders of the citizens without confronting the terrorists.”

We need to be sincere to ourselves in this country. This evil and deceitful govt headed by incompetent Buhari has not defeated Boko Haram. The other day the news was that they took control of two LGAs and now unconfirmed reports says that they are planning a major assault on Maiduguri. The truth is that Boko Haram is very much a potent force and Buhari isn't ready to end this insurgency

As far as I am concerned there are enemies among the troops been sent to fight Boko-Haram. Their informant are the one divulging the tactics of the Nigeria army to the enemies. Until the Nigeria army fishes this guys out that's when we can say we have a headway until then we are just wasting our time and effort on this war

The enemy is from the top: Buhari, his kitchen cabinet, top military brass. Once these are wiped out and replaced, then there will be real action against BH.

Buhari would tell you that at least BH is not holding any territory as was the case in the past. So the people of the NE they are killing now are just soft targets
