I don't get the concluding the 2nd part of the concluding section of your statement. How does the cost of goods not differ much?

I was pointing out that consumer and industrial goods of the same quality (not knockoff or imitation) cost the same amount of dollars: smartphones, cars, TVs, air conditioners, paint, tiles, generators, laptops, etc. Yes, there are cheaper (Chinese) versions that Nigerians have access to, but if an American bought those cheaper versions too, they'd pay the same price.

For instance, a tokunbo Camry in Nigeria costs about the same in the US, in fact more in Nigeria since resellers need to profit. Similarly for buying a machine for your business (of comparable quality).

That's why I say they are the same in dollar terms. But we're working 8x the amount of time in Nigeria to afford the same goods. A middle-class American can buy a $200 (N100k) Android phone with two day's wages after tax ($100/day). A comparatively well paid middle-class Nigerian, making 250k monthly, will work almost 12 days to make that same amount of money (N8k/day)

In fact, after adding cost of import/clearing, the goods cost more dollar for dollar in Nigeria.

For instance, if a tokunbo Camry in Nigeria cost 1/8 the cost in US, then I would say the goods are cheaper in Nigeria, but that's not the case. Similarly for buying a machine for your business (of comparable quality): it's not 1/8 the cost if you buy it in Nigeria, yet it takes 8x the labour to get it.

In fact, after adding cost of import/clearing, the goods cost more dollar for dollar in Nigeria.
I actually contrived to understand you after deep simulation and relation. Not many people would understand you due to your complex narration in explanation. But I get what you're saying on the other hand, know that purchasing power of a currency and strength of middle class are other factors to consider in your analytical approach.

Effective worldwide on 29 August, Nigerian citizens will be required to pay extra as visa issuance fee.

The US Consulate announced this in a statement issued earlier today.

In a statement, the US Consulate in Nigeria explained that the extra cost will be applicable to only those whose visa requests were granted.“Effective worldwide on 29 August, Nigerian citizens will be required to pay a visa issuance fee, or reciprocity fee, for all approved applications for non-immigrant visas in B, F, H1B, I, L, and R visa classifications,” the statement read.

“The reciprocity fee will be charged in addition to the non-immigrant visa application fee, also known as the MRV fee, which all applicants pay at the time of application. Nigerian citizens whose applications for a non-immigrant visa are denied will not be charged the new reciprocity fee.

“Both reciprocity and MRV fees are non-refundable, and their amounts vary based on visa classification.”

The statement also explained that the increase in the fee is based on a similar treatment afforded to US citizens by foreign governments, in this case, the Nigerian government.

According to the statement, “Visa issuance fees are implemented under the principle of reciprocity: when a foreign government imposes additional visa fees on U.S. citizens, the United States will impose reciprocal fees on citizens of that country for similar types of visas,” the statement read.

“Nationals of a number of countries worldwide are currently required to pay this type of fee after their nonimmigrant visa application is approved.

“The total cost for a U.S. citizen to obtain a visa to Nigeria is currently higher than the total cost for a Nigerian to obtain a comparable visa to the United States. The new reciprocity fee for Nigerian citizens is meant to eliminate that cost difference.”

There is a HUGE difference. When a US citizen applies for a Nigerian visa, he/she will most likely get it. However the reverse it not true, chances of a Nigerian getting a US visa is around 10 to 20% and US keeps the visa fees regardless of whether the visa was issued or not. The Nigerian government keeps failing us, how about making sure this people reduce their fee cause the chances of getting a US visa from here is so slim, but I'm sure they will keep mute as usual.

Chai, most Nigerians don't read...you just go school go mark attendance ni?

Did you read this part at all:

“The total cost for a U.S. citizen to obtain a visa to Nigeria is currently higher than the total cost for a Nigerian to obtain a comparable visa to the United States. The new reciprocity fee for Nigerian citizens is meant to eliminate that cost difference.”

Stated above is the reason for the increase and not because of scammers or fraudsters just arrested. For your information fraud is Global, you think Americans are not fraudulent? Have you heard of the American named Bernie Madoff? He defrauded Americans an estimated $64.8 Billion.

Too many dumb people on Nairaland.
