This month we are focusing on education

Our theme is on Learning

We know learning can be formal and informal

Our focus is on the formal aspect

Even as September is generally a month of resumption at the different levels of education, we must recognise that there are several fctors that make for a wholesome and quality education.

Join us as we address, by discussion and creation of action plans, how we can make education and learning to be improved to better serve the society at large.

Let's start with the issue of teachers

What's your take on their passion?

I hear Finland has the best system of education. I believe there are a lot of private and even public schools with such decent facilities.
But when it comes to passion, many teachers are after the pay, forget it

Learning is more important that passing exams!
Yes,
If someone cheats by engaging in exam malpractice to pass his exams and he does pass,
Would you prefer him to someone else,
Who attempted the questions on his own, failed and learnt from his errors and did his corrections?

We must encourage learning, honest learning.
Not cheating is not equal to failing.
You can stay away from cheating and still pass.

It's not enough for us to say God forbid that our children will not attend deplorable schools.

What about those who can't afford better schools for their children or those who don't have parents?

Let's be helpful and help address the issue of poor standard of education in Nigeria.

Month Review
This month we looked at sub-issues under the theme Learning a.k.a. Literacy! Learning entails both formal and informal trainings and tutelage. It involves the student and the teacher.
The United Nations enjoins nations to take seriously the issue of Learning and Literacy as it declared 8th September yearly as International Literacy Day every year to sensitise the public on the issue.
Remember in May we dealt with the theme of Communication. Just as communication is important to impact knowledge, we acknowledge that English language has been used in Nigeria as a means of learning. We also celebrate our individual languages and recognise that learning and literacy is also important with our languages. While we are to obey our teachers, we are not expected to allow them or seniors in school to lead us astray or teach us nonsense!
When Jesus is in our learning we will be humble and useful. When people use their learning and literacy to oppress, device bombs, evil and brag, then you’ll know that they have missed it.
As Christians we know God is our Father, for our success in having godly wisdom and knowledge, we must fear God, give Him glory and allow Jesus into our minds and understanding solely.
Jesus Christ came to show us the example of love in learning when He sat at age 12 with elders in His Father’s house and by Him we shall not perish for we do not lack knowledge.

Although education is for learning, most educational models are designed for students to achieve grades only and not knowledge, learning becomes secondary if the main thing that prevails is that they have to pass with a good grade, without verifying if the student was really able to acquire the knowledge imparted in class and if they are developing their individual skills and abilities. The British model is one of the few that I know of that is taking interest in the aspect of student development, and also the Finnish educational model.

I also agree that getting an education and gaining knowledge is not the same thing, unfortunately very often students just go to an educational institution and wait for graduation, and buy written homework assignments. And in order to have some knowledge, you need to do your homework yourself. In addition, there are services where you can download ready-made examples, for example https://studentshare.org/ Here you can find a base of essays on any topic and easily write your own written work and eventually graduate from the university with a diploma and knowledge.
