Nigerians Celebrate Emeritus Prof. Taiwo At 100! by wales(m): 7:22am On Oct 28, 2010
Joined by an array of prominent Nigerians across all sectors at the All Saints Church, Yaba, Lagos, renowned educationist and Emeritus Professor Cornelius Olaleye Taiwo on Wednesday celebrated his 100th birthday.

The attendance at the thanksgiving service which read like who-is-who included the former Head of Interim National Government, Chief Ernest Shonekan; Chairman of First City Monumental Bank, Otunba Subomi Balogun; industrialist, Chief Chris Ogunbanjo; Afenifere chieftain, Ayo Adebanjo; Chairman, Punch Nigeria Limited, Chief Ajibola Ogunshola; advertising guru, Biodun Shobanjo and Alaye of Odogbolu, Oba Adedeji Onagoruwa.

Also in attendance were members of Boys Scouts; old boys of the celebrant’s alma mater, St. Andrews College, Oyo, academics and old students of University of Lagos, where Taiwo was the pioneer and only provost of the College of Education. They were there to pay homage to a man who had contributed immensely to the Nigerian education sector.

Diocesan Bishop of All Saints’ Church, Prof. Adebayo Akinde, in his sermon eulogised the educationist for his sense of giving and challenged priviledged Nigerians to emulate the selfless lifestyle of the Centenarian.

According to Akinde, Pa Taiwo gave what he had to the growth of the education sector in Nigeria, to the growth and achivements of his students and also to the church.

He said, “Prof. Emeritus Taiwo is an accomplished academic. Above all, he is a giver. He is always giving his best to his students and the schools where he taught.

“He gives his all for the good and growth of the education sector and the society as a whole.

“Papa is a giver in all respects. I thank God for giving him to the church. He always contributes to the development of the church and all the societies and groups he belongs to.

“That God gives him long life is a compensation for the life he lives. God always reward those who do good with the grace of long life.

“Papa is a fulfilled man. God bless him with long lige, good children and he is an accomplished educationist. He is lawyer too.”

The large congregation erupted in intermittent applause and praise when the story of the life of the educationist was read.

The peak of the church service was when the emeritus professor was called out for special thanksgiving. The congregation stood and gave loud cheers as the Centenarian danced to the altar in the midst of his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, family members, associates and beneficiaries.

The same jubilation was repeated at the Multi-purpose Hall of the University of Lagos as the Prof. was ushered in for reception. Pa Taiwo also danced to the music of Lagbaja.

Pa Taiwo was born in Oru, Ijebu in the present Ogun State on October 27, 1910.
