You can't give what you don't have, we warned them that this man is a failure, they refused, they said even if it is only nepa bill that he has they will vote for him and they did and thanks to God that they did cos they are crying more than us today cos we weren't expecting anything cos we already knew him as a failure........failed as a military head of state and failing as a rigged in president. FYI i hate both the APC AND PDP politicians cos they are the same

You are absolutely right. What do they plan to use the increase for? This government needs to be answering tons of questions from Nigerians everyday because they've completely lost track of their final destination.

whytediamond:
The evil government hasn't bothered to tell the people that voted them into power what they intend to use the almost 50% increase in tax revenue for.

How do they expect startups and small businesses to survive?

Can tax be increased without recourse to the National Assembly? Lawyers and constitutionalists in the house, your opinion is needed.

Re: Increment Of VAT To 7.2%: Nigerians Slam FG by Bluffly: 5:03pm On Sep 12, 2019
We copy everything without a road map. The USA does not collect VAT though they have Sales Tax which the highest across the country is 7.5%. That is a developed country that their minimum wage isn't less than $7.5 per hour for which Nigeria's minimum wage is still below 1 dollar per hour and yet Vat is increased to almost equivalent of that of USA.

Priscy01:
Nigerians have reacted with outrage to the approval of an increase in Value Added Tax (VAT) rate in the country from 5 per cent to 7.2 per cent by the Federal Executive Council (FEC), Igbere TV reports.

Igbere TV reports that the Minister of Finance, Budget and National Planning, Zainab Ahmed, announced the approval after the FEC meeting in Abuja on Wednesday.

She said stakeholders, including the National Assembly and the states, would have to agree on the date expected to be in 2020.

“We also reported to council and council has agreed that we start the process toward the increase of the VAT rate. We are proposing and council has agreed, increase in the VAT rate from 5 per cent to 7.2 per cent,” she said.

Nigerians have expressed disappointment with the government over the increase.

Who exactly are the stakeholders, do they not include the average Nigerian on whose purchases the VAT would reflect on... no consultation with us so this yeye increment cannot be allowed to stand.

Acidosis:

Why increase VAT only? Like someone said above, increase fuel price to N250/litre, increase electricity tarrif and ban importation of consumer goods permanently. Las las our head go reset. By the time cost of fuel per litre rises to N700, nobody will teach us how and when to invade DSS to free Sowore and shut down the country. At 7.5%, Nigerians will only protest on Twitter grin Take the damn thing to 55.5%, our head to reset by force grin

Lol

Nigeria has a tax to GDP ratio of 6%. A normal country should have around 30%. Even war torn countries that are poorer than us like Pakistan or Syria have a higher ratio than us.

By increasing the VAT you're only ensuring that the poor people that pay tax will have it harder. Instead improve tax collection and go after those that don't pay but the ones not paying are friends of the government so why will they chase them?
