Nigeria is the third wealthiest country in Africa for 2019 — despite being home to billionaire Aliko Dangote

There are two Nigerians on the list of the Forbes top 5 African billionaires ruled by Aliko Dangote.

You would think this would make Nigeria the wealthiest country on the continent.
The new 2019 Wealth Report compiled by AfrAsia Bank says otherwise as Nigeria is ranked as Africa’s third wealthiest nation and Lagos state the fourth wealthiest city.

Nigeria is home to two of Africa’s richest people — Aliko Dangote with $10.3 billion and Mike Adenuga with $9.2 billion — as estimated by Forbes.

However, data from the September 2019 Wealth Report compiled by AfrAsia Bank shows that it is not the wealthiest nation on the continent.

The number one position goes to South Africa with a total wealth of $649 billion. This excludes government funds and includes private wealth (properties, cash, business interests and equities) held by all the people living in each country.

Egypt is in second place with $303 billion while Nigeria follows with $225 billion.

The report cited the following as reasons for Nigeria’s ranking:

Safety concerns and tensions
Outgoing migration of high-net-worth individuals (HNWIs)
Investors running away because of the clampdown on foreign companies like MTN
Decrease in oil prices
Loss of value in Naira compared to the US dollar

City Ranking

Nigeria ranks even lower in the statistics for the wealthiest cities in Africa. In the list ruled by Johannesburg, Capetown (both in South Africa), and Egypt's Cairo, Lagos, Nigeria is ranked the fourth.

Despite being the largest city in the continent in terms of population and Gross domestic products (GDP), Lagos only has a total wealth of $96 billion.

As of December 2018, Africa has a total wealth of $2.2 trillion, 42 per cent of which is belongs to HNWIs. This shows the alarming disparity between the rich and poor.

1. South Africa - $649 billion

2. Egypt - $303 billion

3. Nigeria - $225 billion

4. Morocco $114 billion

5. Kenya $93 billion

6. Angola $69 billion

7. Ghana $59 billion

8. Ethiopia $57 billion

9. Tanzania $57 billion

Wealth of nations doesn't necessarily translate into good standard of living. SA and Egypt have more wealth but less population or mouth to feed and cater for and that translates into a better living standard or per capita wealth. Morocco and Kenya have less wealth but when we juxtapose it with their smaller population compared to Nigeria's, they still have a better standard of living.
We haven't factored in the looted portion of this overall wealth into the equation o. Nigeria maybe wealthy but we are equally poor.

This list seems inaccurate considering the fact that there are many wealthy people in the country which are more than 9,900. Since the calculation is based on private assets like property, cash, business and equity... I doubt if we will be number 3. Its either we are number 1 or number 2. When you look at how Nigeria is structured along wealth creation and business... we will see that there are many millionaires in the country that people dont know about. The Forbes lists of Billionaires in Africa have four black Nigerians there. SA has 4 whites and 1 black.

I think Forbes should take this private wealth calculation up and release an authentic list for us.

When you look at people working in Oil and Gas, Telecom, ICT, Banks etc and even some of our Pastors.... Nigeria cant be third. Nigeria is one of the countries with highest number of private jets in the world and how come this list is putting us as number 3. In terms of number of Entreperneurs, I doubt if there is any country in Africa that outnumbers Nigeria. Talking about mansions of wealthy Individuals in Lagos, Abuja, PH and co.... I doubt if the country's private citizen's wealth put together will now be around $225 billion. The list is inaccurate to me. We should be number 1 or number 2.

Nigeria is a country where her citizens act, talk and behave based on the problem of the country and not the reality and fact on ground. Many people saying Nigeria should be last on the list are saying that because of the country's problem. Now Nigerians have reduced themselves to the level of being tossed about by the country's problem and there is no country in the world without problem. The leaders many of us blame is just as a result of mere ignorance. Nigeria is a country whereby you are free to make it if you want to. You can pick a problem and solve it and make your money. People are coming with solutions to Nigeria's problem and they are making money and many of us are sitting there doing the leadership's blame game... when we know that corruption and co is with we the citizens and it is out of these citizens that leaders are produced. We better have sense and solve a problem and move on. If half of the population is as successful as business tycoons in the country like Dangote, Jim Ovia, Adenuga etc... will our country not be great. The owner of Airpeace volunteered led to help his country and today he is being celebrated. Dangote is solving our refinery problem now. Bishop Oyedepo's University, Covenant is now the fourth best in Africa. Tony Elemelu and co are there doing exploit. Nigeria's greatness lies in the hand of her citizens. The earlier we know this truth, the better for us.

Thanks

Seems you don't know that there are many kids on this platform. Since early this month, many of South Africa newspapers have joined the likes of CNN and BBC in focusing on bad news about Nigeria . I'm 100% sure this rubbish report was compiled somewhere in Johannesburg.

We will continue to be poverty capital until we place our human resource over commodities.

Until then we are actually the porest in Africa.

If 100mill subscribe to dstv at 5$/mth that is $500 mill to south Africa every month.
If 90mill spend 5$/mth on MTN mobilerecharge that is another $500m pto Southafrica.
Now which country gives Nigeria $1bil/mth for services. None. So we are the porest simple.

The list is stupid since it is heavily skewed by billionaires. The list should be based on average income and quality of life per person and by that ranking Botswana would be first.
