The Speaker of House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, has assured that the lawmakers would ensure that Nigerians get adequate supply of electricity that is commensurate with what they pay for.

He disclosed this when he received the management team of the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) who paid him a courtesy call in his office in Abuja on Wednesday. He said it was the responsibility of the House to make life easier for Nigerians. Gbajabiamila emphasised that the House would pay utmost attention to the practice of estimated billing by electricity distribution companies (Discos).

The Speaker warns that the House would not tolerate estimated billings as Discos are taking advantage of the system to present outrageous bills to Nigerians. He said the federal lawmakers have resolved to revisit the matter and come up with a law that would put a stop to estimated billing of electricity across the country.

It could be recalled that the Speaker had during his term as House Leader in the 8th Assembly, presented a bill to criminalise estimated billing but it did not get presidential assent. However, the bill was reintroduced for another consideration after the inauguration of the 9th Assembly. “The issue of estimated billing has been in the front burner. It has been in this House, and we will revisit it soon.

We can’t allow Discos to continue to do what they have been doing over the years. He commended the present TCN management led by its Managing Director, Malam U. G. Mohammed, and tasked them to work closely with the leadership of the House and relevant committees to achieve its goals.

The Speaker also called for a periodic review of the performance of Discos and vowed that the House would do everything within its powers to ensure that TCN delivers on its mandate to Nigerians. In his remarks earlier, the TCN MD said the company has been repositioned since the new management took over. He disclosed that the main challenge facing the Discos was lack of investment adding that the Discos need $4.3 billion investment to function well.

The MD lamented that the past management of TCN under Manitoba did not perform well in the four years when it managed the company, with non-audited accounts for the period alongside other challenges.

Get gịnị? It's all just talks and nothing is going to happen. Obj/atiku made a terrible error during the privatization of the power sector. It happened that at the time, Major stakeholders in the generator importation business like the Mikano and Co have stakes in the power sector, now how do you expect a generator importer to fix power and ruine his business.

Secondly, in Nigeria, home users consume more petroleum products than car owners. Every family has a generator for electricity but not every drive cars, so if power is fixed, only car owners will purchase gasoline which will make the demand within Nigeria reduced.

Corrupt business men are running a cartel and feeding off our foolishness, we continue to enable them by not fighting back. Its absurd that our neighboring African countries have steady power supply but we that supply them resources for generating steady power don't enjoy it.

But why don't you pray that this great step succeeds? It doesn't pay being a cynic. The outcome will impact on all Nigerians one way or the other. For once, let's support government initiatives, or we remain victims of bad governance forever,

Same nonsense statement we've been hearing since 1960.

When will dey make it compulsory for DISCO to issue meters or give free electricity till they issue meters?

Have dey stopped estimated billing?

This is the most sorry situations in Nigeria...

My landlord is taking this situation to extort money from me at will.

We don't enjoyed light up to 5hrs but the bill keep increasing every month.

I always doubt the measure that increased the bill.

The promise of getting a better light in Nigeria is the usual way our leaders keep riding on our fear to stand up for a better Nigeria by nationwide protests.

So in ur mind set, these sets of politicians are representing you or they are only saying things u want to hear. I dn't think they need to announce it until they take a radical action befr I start believing them. Av u forgotten so soon how many promises Buhari said to Nigerians befr he was voted in, how many has he fulfilled? Oga politicians knows our weaknesses and they use it to get to us. Take for instance, befr Trump got into power, he emphasized on curbing illegal immigrants to and in America, is he not fulfilling it. There's difference between merely saying it and working towards it.
