Minister of Interior Capt. Emmanuel Iheanacho has petitioned Vice-President Namadi Sambo and the National Security Adviser (NSA), Gen. Owoye Azazi, over  the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Hafiz Ringim’s call  that the Federal Government should scrap the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC). Ringim had claimed that NSCDC’s functions overlap with those of the police. He said some sections of the 2007 Act of the NSCDC contravened Section 214( 1) of the 1999 Constitution. It was also reported that the police frowned at the use of fire arms by men of the NSCDC.   The minister’s petition, entitled: “Publication calling for the scrapping of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) by the IGP,” said: “I am informed that the Federal Government has set up a committee to examine the allegation made by the IGP. I, therefore, hope that this committee will do a thorough and dispassionate job to ensure that the overall interest of the country will guide whatever decision is taken on the matter. “It is on record that the vice-president has commended the NSCDC as a vibrant organisation whose role cannot be under-estimated, especially, in the protection of the nation’s national assets and infrastructure. “For the avoidance of doubt and without any inhibition, the misconception and erroneous impression about the NSCDC should be corrected once and for all. The NSCDC is a body created by an Act of Parliament, the NSCDC Act 2 , 2003 as amended by the 2007 Act. “The call by the IGP to scrap NSCDC questions the wisdom and authority of the National Assembly as enshrined under Section 4 of 1999 Constitution to make laws for peace, order and good governance of the federation.
