Today, the House of Representatives Adhoc Committee on ports decongestion and restoration wound down its tour of locations. The 14-man committee which has Hon Baba Yusuf Yakub as the chairman was at Onitsha River Port to see things for themselves. At the public hearing which was held at the hall of the All Saints Cathedral Complex, Onitsha, after the tour of the facility by the members had the heads of many agencies and stakeholders in attendance. Among the agencies invited to make contributions on the way forward were National Inland Waterways (NIWA), Nigerian Shippers' Council, Customs and Excise, Anambra State Markets Amalgamated Trader Association (ASMATA), Importers' Association, and the representatives of Anambra State Government etc. They all agreed to the importance of a decentralized port system in Nigeria and called for immediate resuscitation of the Onitsha River Port as well as the other Eastern Ports. |
