The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has said that it will not back down on the strike by its members in the South-East state universities except the respective state governments implement the agreement reached between the Federal Government and ASUU in 2009.

National President of ASUU, Professor Ukachukwu Awuzie, who briefed journalists in Awka, Anambra State, on Tuesday, said this had become imperative as the respective state governments had adopted tricks on the issue.

Professor Awuzie, who addressed newsmen in company with leaders of ASUU from the zone, said the union had also rejected the 50 per cent pay rise and the additional N31 million monthly subvention offered by the Anambra State government to workers in the Anambra State University (ANSU).

According to the ASUU president, the offer by the government of Mr. Peter Obi failed to address the demands of the striking lecturers, pointing out that, “the strike was not to ask for pay rise but to address the critical shortfall of infrastructure and funding of the university."

He said, “this struggle can only escalate in the coming weeks given their present disposition and our members are ready and willing to make whatever sacrifices that are needed to protect the interest of the youth and people of the South-East and the university culture.”
