The Nigeria Union of Mines Workers has commended President Muhammadu Buhari for taken a bold step toward revitalization of the ailing Ajaokuta steel company through the propose signing of an agreement with Russia , the original builders of the steel plant.

Chairman of the union, Ajaokuta steel branch, Comrade Mohammed Abdulsalam Jimoh, who gave the commendation in Lokoja Tuesday while addressing newsmen on independent day, said the federal government for the first time in many years was about to take a right step toward a right direction to bring back the original builders of the steel plant in order to revitalise and make it operational.

“Alas, many concessions has taken place in the past without result, even one of the concession between the federal government and Solgas Energy Limited resulted to litigation that took over ten years before it was resolved .

“The concession failed in its totality because the companies were not the original builders and they don’t have any idea of the steel plant.

“Now that President Muhammadu Buhari led administration has taken a bold step to bring the original builders of the plant back to complete the plant, I am optimistic and confident that in no distance time what we have been dreaming and cleaving for will come back to life” the union leader said.

While appealing to President Buhari not to renege on his laudable plan for Ajaokuta steel company, Comrade Jimoh describe the effort of the present administration as a welcome development that will put the country on a threshold of industrialization.

“I am calling on the management and staff of the steel company to support the president with prayers to enable him actualise his plan of going to Russia to sign an agreement for the completion of the integrated plant that will create enormous jobs and generate huge revenue for the government” he added.

Speaking further the union leader , said that Ajaokuta steel workers deserve national honour for maintaining and keeping the giant plant against vandalization, saying the technical audit conducted in 2010 and 2018 clearly indicated that all the equipment are intact.

According to him “It is unacceptable for any body to claim that the steel workers are redundant. If not for the workers the plant could not have passed the several technical audit conducted to ascertain the standard of the plant”

I call onto thee to once again cease this opportunity to insult the hell out of the leadership of the present administration.

Since they've given the Chinese opportunity in all most sectors it will be wise to grant the Russians their age long dream.

AJSC is very vital for industrialization with lots of design and fabrication companies springing up. I must also not forget Natasha the real woman of steel. I guess her hand is on this.

Very welcomed development if followed through but the problem with Nigeria is the inability to put words to action and those that manage to start most times apply the breaks but until we go full throttle on all our endeavors in life, we might end up losing opportunities we would have gained if we had followed through

I’m not convinced about this move. I remember when Deziani told us in 2012 that the TAM of our refineries have been awarded to the original builders of the refineries. Nothing came out of it and the refineries are still moribund.

They should just sell the Ajaokuta steel complex and stop wasting government funds on it. It is only private ownership that can revamp that place.

Well, let's hope it works.

I'm not too o[ptimiostic though. We have signed and signed pacts...and nothing has happened.

Then there is the issue that steel isn't the moneyspinner it should be. Cheap chinese steel is flodding the market. Not too long ago, South Africa's steel company was laying off workers.

Anyway, we shall see. IMHO....we should not have awarded the contract to the Russians in the first place back in the 1970's...just sayin.

The USSR originally built the plant not Russia, and so much time has passed that it is doubtful whether the OEMs still exist or the technology is still viable.

Although in all fairness, the failure of Ajaokuta is not Bubus fault, I doubt if his primary school education, herdsman outlook and limited intellectual gifts are sufficient to solve this problem.
In fact, I can bet he is not up to the task.

Nothing will come of this.

Over $10 billion spent on Ajaokuta Plant, yet it has not been able to smelt any steel for over 39 years of its existence.

Some people just want to chop their portion of the "national cake".

Nothing will change in Naija until we begin to hold people accountable for their actions.

This is good news, only the Russian can build that plant because Russian design and equipment are unique, can not fit with equipment from other manufacturers.
