Can you tell us why night vigil is wrong? Are you saying there can't be morning or afternoon vigil?
This is because vigil is only done at night. so saying night vigil again is called "tautology"

You only assumed you understood my stance. May be re-read my comment and you will have a better grasp. I said what the writer called blunder is " deviation " as a result of the English language being a second language in our country. Go and learn from experts in the field of language and you will discover that no learner of a foreign language can use it perfectly like the native speakers. You're bragging about another man's language and have no plan to save your own indigenous language. I wonder why some Nigerians love to identity with everything foreign to the extent of labeling their fellow countrymen not smart for using the English language "incorrectly". There is nothing called substandard language anywhere. No matter the language, whether pidgin or creole, if the speaker and the audience can understand themselves, it's a complete language. Language primarily exists for communication. If it can perform that role, no issue whatsoever. I'm not insulting the intelligence of anyone, it's just that you're suffering from colonial mentality.

Oga, the fact that linguists have recognised that cultural and social factors can lead to deviant constructions does not preclude us recognising that said constructions are incorrect

"No learner of a foreign language can use it natively like native speakers"? And who told you we aren't native speakers? Who told you we are learners? As far as its our national language,we are native English speakers. We've been in contact with this language for at least 60 years, we use it to communicate and we have access to resources that teach it.

Germans and Spaniards are non-native speakers and learners, yet they start the language from secondary school and always make an effort to improve on it

Come on! We are intelligent enough to learn the rules of a language and apply them correctly, stop making feeble excuses

For your information, native, pidgin and Creole languages have rules and everybody follows them. That stuff in OP is not pidgin, it's wrong grammar

If OP made a post about pidgin blunders, would you be saying all this?

Is "I chop never" as correct as "I never chop"? Is that part of your so-called deviation?

You have a colonial mentality yourself but you don't even realise it. The colonialists and slave traders assumed that we were too stupid and lazy to learn how to do anything and you are thinking along the same lines

We don't need to wallow in ignorance, no knowledge is a waste

A wise man once said, "you can't win an ignorant man in any argument" The above quote synopsized my encounter with you on this platform.

I gave up on you sir the moment you said we are native speakers of the English language. Imagine a person arguing blindly for what he does not even know. I also rested my case when you blatantly said English language is our national language in Nigeria! Please use you Google search engine to help you differentiate between national language and official language. Have a wonderful time out. Thanks.

Haha! grin Your own ignorance is astounding

An official language can be a national language if you don't know. The two words are not mutually exclusive and they are used politically according to discretion. I think google should be your own best friend right now

A native speaker of a language is someone who is raised in it...which we are! We are not meant to be, but we are. It's a shame that the white people captured us, but the past is the past

Better accept it and stop dropping irrelevant linguistic jargon instead of reading the OP as a corrective post, which it is

And you have a good evening too.

Americans have their English, British same thing, Canadians and Australians.
Most of those things you wrote there are our own Nigerian English. We speak it within ourselves and even to outsiders and they understand. Who told you that they are wrong. We are tired of somebody telling us that our English is wrong. We are not copying British again. We have Nigerianised our own English deal with that.
Endorsed! cheesy

But, If u are a student, pls use the British English o cheesy

People that use 'your' in a sentence instead of 'you're or You are

Some people would say

'Your the one' instead of 'You're the one' or 'You are the one'

Some will say: 'Am coming' (wrong)
I am coming or I'm coming (correct)

Some will say: 'Have called him' (wrong)
I have called him or I've called him (correct)
Most people that use ur or your instead of "you are" actually know e ain't right. It just sounds kinda dope. You know wah am sayin? cool

Only 16 points out of all what you tabled above can be provable or considered as blunders.

There is what we called Discourse Analysis and the Law of Mother's tongue in English. Any writing, response or conversations in line within these categories cannot be said to have falling shorts of the rules guiding the Use of English or termed as blunders...

Hahaha! Is this deliberate? Am I the only one laughing out loud? I am not quarrelling with the thrust of your argument...just the image of the falling boxer shorts... cheesy What were you thinking about while typing? grin

But since the topic is grammatical blunders, may I observe that a common "deviation" of Nigerian English from standard English, is to use the present participle and past imperfect interchangeably (being and been being notorious examples). Case in point here. If expressing these thoughts in other English speaking countries, fallen short is the form to use. grin

Peace.

Its kind of true,

If you say "I forgot my homework at home", are you trying to say that you left it at home or that when you were at home, you couldnt remember it?
I can deliberately leave my phone at home, yes but it doesn't mean I can't forget to take my phone with me. That 19 is a fat lie.

Really its not a lie its a popular grammatical quandary that people talk about a lot. Truly, you are supposed to refrain from saying that you "forgot" something in a place for syntactical reasons

But practically it makes more sense to us to say it that way
